Three Pickles Is Opening a Second Santa Barbara Shop

••• Three Pickles is taking over South Coast Deli’s former space at the corner of Chapala and Micheltorena. (Thanks to John for the heads-up.) This will be the company’s third location, after the others on Canon Perdido and Fairview Avenue.

••• Gala, the restaurant in the former Low Pigeon space at Anacapa and Ortega, is now open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Look for a full profile in the next few days, and in the meantime, you can reserve online, or the restaurant says it’s saving a bunch of space for walk-ins.

••• 4 Eggs & Pizza in Victoria Court has changed its name to SB Pho, but the menu is the same.

••• Azul, the Mexican restaurant on Anapamu between State and Anacapa, has another soft-opening planned for February 14, and the plan is to be consistently open from then on. I can’t be the only one excited to get back in that courtyard. (Photo by Anthony Cabrera.)

••• L. reports that Kaz to Go has opened in the same complex at the Tee-Off. And as we surmised som time ago, the chef behind it is indeed Kazumoto Sato, most recently of Kai Sushi.

••• After I wrote about the debut of the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, some new info came in: Gin’s Tap Bar (a bar and smokehouse) is expected to open February 16 (Thursday through Sunday), with daily service starting March 1. And the Shed, the poolside restaurant/bar offering “Mediterranean-inspired cuisine,” will open March 10.

••• As mentioned in yesterday’s post, the Drift hotel’s café and bar—Dawn and Dusk, respectively—are now open (along with the rest of the hotel).

••• Exciting news for the valley: Na Na Thai, the popular weekly pop-up in Los Olivos, is opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the old Morrell’s Farm Fresh Dining storefront at 225 McMurray Road in Buellton. Here’s hoping the fried chicken earns a permanent spot on the menu.

Considering how everything went down with Southcoast losing their lease, this feels pretty slimy.

Just want to point out that it seems that South Coast Deli was kicked out of their Chapala location so that Three Pickles could move in. The landlord, John Holehouse, refused to negotiate a new lease after their long tenure at that location, forcing them out (blindsiding them) at the last minute. Considering the folks at SCD were trying to negotiate their lease for months and were practically ghosted by the landlord, leads me to believe this plan has been in the works for a while. This is nothing against Three Pickles, just unfair landlord practice when SCD has to shut down their successful business and the multitude of difficult layers that that entails in, what looks to be, some shady dealings.

I hear the the owners of the palms in carpinteria are in negotiations with the people that own teddys by the sea & brass bird coffee to try and work out a deal.
Is that just a rumor or might there be something there?

What’s that smell? Smells like some shit. Get rid of one deli for another? 3 Pickles is like the Sprouts sandwich bar but not $5.

Really? Three pickles? How disappointing, what a downgrade. Guess I’ll have to take the extra 5 minutes to the other south coast location. Scummy business move.

Drove by Mattei’s at dusk last night- 3/4’s done, still looks shiny and out of place- but cars and more low lighting on made it look inviting. Just need that dust fencing GONE

I agree with KO’s comments… Things went down in an insidious manner- not naturally or with integrity. Knowing the credibility of the South Coast deli folks, I have great faith that they will come out on top of this despite the apparent guileful dealings forcing them out.

Many landlords in our area don’t seem interested in the ripple effect of dumping a long standing fabulous tenant that employs and serves our community. They seem solely interested in grabbing more dollars at others expense. Shame on them!

I like how so many people are quick to judge landlords.

Please don’t tell me if any of you had the opportunity to rent a property you owned for more you wouldn’t.?!
Please…!!!!!

Of course, David, everyone thinks exactly like that. I have to say, though, that it’s tons more satisfying when I can screw over a friend or family member in the process (bonus points for giving it to elder family members).

Thanks for the sarcasm Elle. I really do appreciate it I am just trying to make a point. I am 100% sure you would be one of those landlords raising your tenants rent every chance you had.

David,
I own and have owned both commercial and residential property in SB. For some of us it is not about making the most money but the moral compass and ethics of business that needs to counter the greed that is exponentially increasing. A good tenant is priceless and property owners need to consider their intentions and actions. SCD was a successful and much appreciated business at Chapala and Arrellaga supported by professionals, small businesses and residents . It was our neighborhood place, we knew the names of the workers and managers. The prices and portions were fair and the service great. They will be sorely missed by us all.

Many people are outraged by the treatment SCD received from the landlord. You know what we need to do, people, go to a different SCD location and boycott Three Pickles. The Pickles owner had to have been in on this with the landlord for many month. Besides, SCD is SOOOO much better

Azul is still not open for business. I called for Valentine’s Day reservations and was told they are still waiting for City permits. Hopefully they’ll open soon!
