The first uni pic shows it's spawning and the second one (nigiri) shows it wasn't entirely cleaned (the seaweed specs). It surprises me they would serve both of those. Great review and the pics pretty much line up with the descriptions.
IMO, for traditional nigiri, TERU, when their premium fish arrives (check their IG for daily updates) is the best sushi in town. Arigato doesn't even make tamago, and most sushi restaurants in town buy it pre-made). Teru makes it (as does Sun Sushi). Arigato fancies up their rolls with colorful sauces and ornamentals on the plate, To me it's always been the most overrated and over priced sushi in town by a mile.

I had been very curious about this spot — just this week asking about if any friends had yet gone. And it was our anniversary, so I was curious to try something new/special. (p.s. I really relate so much to being greeted by surname , but the server has no idea what to do with my husband's presence). Anyway, your review was immensely useful and captured what I suspected. It's fine — but for me, probably best left for the guests that love the Miramar. I always approach the place with open arms, hoping for a special experience, and sadly have walked back home with a bit of disappointment in some way each time. I was hoping this was more like LA's venerable n/naka and less like a perfectly ok hotel restaurant.
So, for sushi, I think I'll stick with regulars the SB-loved, Arigato or my personal favorite, simple and easy spot: Shintori Sushi on upper state. Both considerably cheaper and on a level that I expect from eating sushi for dinner.
And for intimate omakase, I still think the best spot in our area is Yoichi's, hidden away on Victoria.
Curious if others have spots that they swear by as trust go-to's?
Just can’t get into the Miramar. Feel like a lot of their interior decorating is very generic Rosewood hotel and prices are just so over the top. If I want great Japan food, Arigato ‘s at half the price is where it’s at. Their restaurants are for hotel guests who pay those prices without a care. San Ysidro Ranch is pretty expensive, but that downstairs patio is still one of my favorite restaurant settings anywhere.

Born and raised local was excited and decided to try it for dinner. Well, here’s our first impressions to share:
Positives: The space is beautiful inside, tequila selection is impressive such that it puts Santo Mezcal to shame, looks like a piece of art.
Negatives: A bar that closes at 9, my kids don’t even go to bed that early. They automatically charge a 20% gratuity, what, really, wow. Mexican food is the cheapest food out there with the highest margins, but these food prices are outrageous.
Summary: This place better hit it out of the park or it’s going to die on the vine, let me know when that happens, I’ll be there to buy up all the tequila.

Definitely pricey! Hopefully they expand their menu a bit for some moderately priced items. Tough sell for locals to go when we have so many Mexican options. Beautiful space though, will definitely go for a drink
Lucky you having such friends and having experienced those homes firsthand! Whenever I’m at a loss for inspiration or down and bored I open “Inside Tangier” and find something to swoon over. I wish there were more to swoon over locally, but lately that is not the case. ?

Agree. And to call this a riad is a bit of a joke. The pool is successful. I am great friends with the author of Inside Tangier and have visited many of those houses. This is not in the same camp at all.
I'm such a negative Nelly but these homes are all so drab. When was the last truly exciting listing? Feels like years ago.
Roblar has promise as a blank slate though I couldn't agree more about the kitchen and bathrooms. Blah. The new homeowner can pick up the beautiful book "Inside Tangier" for inspiration on how to breathe life into the place with color and texture. It's one of my favorite books.
The absence of personality or soul in nearly every listing coming to market these days is depressing. It's getting worse by the year. I remember when homes here had character and color and souls. They're still out there, but no one is selling them, I suppose. Makes for some seriously yawn-inducing real estate browsing the last few years. Glad I'm not personally in the market right now because it is grim.

Love the open spaces, and the Dolphin Mural. I think it is going to be wonderful. Just need to make sure there is an elevator to get up stairs or ecculater for the elders to get up as I know there are alot of Seniors in Carpinteria and most my visitors are Seniors?
