Fry's is a wonderful spot and has some cool history - the rocks from the carved-out cliff on the left now form the Santa Barbara breakwater, and you can still see the remains of the cables and rail tracks used to transport rocks onto the barges. Some good fishing out there too, highly recommended!
not one of the comments on the Pride Parade was made from a Solvang or Valley person as far anyone here can tell, as page posted is a tourist page- so it mostly looks like TROLLS. And they come out when their is no policing of page.... It would be fun if you did a deep dive on the couple who started the big rucus about flags/sidewalks =PRIDE in Solvang and published plans about opening a home for kids who felt out of place in SYV- they've abruptly closed their doors and moved out of town(?), leaving many sad about the store Onderchild- which had a last ditch effort to stay open by installing a candy filled hallway at their entrance. No webpage to explain their closing, no last day wishes- nothing. Just gone.
The best part about the Channel Islands is how difficult it is to get out there, hope it always remains a iffy, burdensome issue!

Myself and my friends have been "charter curious" for quite some time, with an eye on going to the channel islands. So......please let us know what you figure out!
Thank you for an amazing article on Santa Rosa, a must do for us now!

The city suing an owner performing 30 years of neglected improvements on an apartment building sends a message… don’t upgrade your property but let it slide into disrepair in the name of tenant activism.
I’ve been coming to Derfs since I was a child and the staff here are family. This iconic SB spot will be missed and the people will be missed.
No idea where all the ???? Came from~~~~ GOING TO MISS DERFS!! ???? See y’all tomorrow
Going to miss Derf’s! It’s Our home away from home for a lot of us. Love the people, the yummy food, all of the crew, everything. So many great & funny memories, bday parties, holiday parties etc. Thx Kent for everything, we all love u. ♥️♥️♥️♥️ Derf’s is such a landmark it makes us all so sad ???? tomorrow we will celebrate ???? all the great years
My friends and I would hear the same things. As a Mount Carmel student we would go to the most beautiful concerts there but, the place always seemed kind of sad.
Apple Store on State Street.
Apple Store on state street
Residents are being forced to hack their oaks and hedges if they want to have insurance. It is appalling, but they either lose their insurance or have to pay at least 4 to 5 times more than normal to go on the CA Fair Plan, and the state doesn't seem to want to protect the oaks any more.
???? SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES!!!! Going to miss it SO MUCH!!!
I was a busboy at Derfs for about a year 1980 or so. Never met Dean , I think they said he was away in the big house but i heard he’s a good dude. Loved working there and the people were great !
I agree! The food at the Montecito Cafe was wonderful and a wonderful addition to Montecito’s current offerings.
I believe I worked at 1129 with “Derf”-his last name was Derflinger I think. He left and opened Derf’’s in maybe mid to late 70’s.
I’d it possible to get a hold of the spices mix Coast&Olive put on their popcorn?!?!
I still miss the Montecito Cafe (Jane) that was there. It had great food and was always busy.
If it isn’t the ceiling above the entrance to the Men’s Wearhouse, it could be the ceiling above the entrance to the Apple Store on State Street. Both have interesting ceilings. But I’m pretty sure that one is at the Men’s Wearhouse.
I have lived near Fairview Gardens for over 30 years + enjoyed taking walks through the fields + greenhouses, bringing my grandchildren to play + climb in the glorious Mulberry Tree House, watching the school children's projects, attending fun + informative events + shopping at the Farm Stand. It was humming + vibrant, enriching the lives of so many in our community. That said, it required an enormous amount of money, time, effort + vision to maintain it. I will continue to support Fairview Gardens, hoping that they'll allow interested visitors to freely take walks again, enjoying a bit of wild nature. It would be wonderful if the garden could again be revived, once again an inspiring, enjoyable, beautiful, educational + delicious place for our community.
Derf’s will be missed! My mom & I went all the time in the 80’s for their wonderful cheeseburger & fries. Thank you for the good times????
SB Courthouse
Coast and Olive started out excellently then over time it went down hill until finally, the food was terrible. We stopped going a year ago. Won't be missed. Hope the new incarnation will be something other than Italian ( we have lots of good ones already) or Mexican (same reason).
