••• Consent agendas rarely have much of note, but the one for today’s Architectural Board of Review meeting is an exception. First, the Quality Inn at the corner of De La Vina and Samarkand Drive, just below State will be part of Palisociety‘s Arrive brand (which currently has locations in Austin; Palm Springs; Wilmington, N.C.; and Memphis). Timberlane Partners, which also owns the Palihouse hotel on Garden Street, paid $9.7 million for the property in April 2022. According to the plans, the exterior facelift includes painting the facade Farrow & Ball’s “Pelt,” which is purple. It’s a shame that the prominent roof will be asphalt shingle. Maybe it’s not too late to suggest CeDur…?
••• Also on the ABR’s consent agenda: converting Ray’s Liquor on San Andres Street (Sola/Micheltorena) to a market with a kitchen for preparing food.
••• Meanwhile, the Historic Landmarks Commission’s agenda for this Wednesday includes adding a second floor and roof deck to the Christ Presbyterian Church at 36 E. Victoria Street (at Anacapa): “a 2,778 square foot addition to two existing buildings on two separate parcels totaling 13,126 square feet, resulting in a new combined building totaling 15,904 square feet. Additions include: ground level infill to an existing recessed entry, a new 452 square foot mezzanine level, and a new 2,376 square foot upper level. Project includes a new roof deck, exterior alterations to the existing facades, eight short-term bicycle parking spaces, and a lot merger to combine the two parcels.” Maybe the church is jealous of OceanHills Covenant Church’s plan for a 3,579-square-foot roof deck?
••• A rave from A.: “I just joined a local place that deserves some press, it’s called Evolution Fitness, and the owner does such a great job and it’s such a good deal right now I almost don’t want anyone to know! It’s small-group training and then he has a gorgeous cold plunge and infrared lounge that when you book you get to yourself. And the fitness area is amazing, too. Unlimited small-group circuit training and unlimited private lounge for $259 a month. Also it’s so pristine and clean you could eat off of any surface.” It’s on E. Gutierrez (at Salsipuedes).
••• Goleta’s Dam Dinner is August 19: “Tables and chairs are set up by the dam with breathtaking views of Lake Los Carneros and the mountains. Attendees can bring their own picnic dinner and beverages or purchase food at the event.”
••• The Hadsten Hotel in Solvang, which closed in the fall of 2021 for renovations, will reopen as The Hadsten, and it’ll be part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection. (The sign says “established 2022,” but the hotel was built in 1972.) The Hilton website says reservations are being taken starting August 31.
••• A self-explanatory group show called I Love My Horse has an opening reception Thursday (5-8 p.m.), with a preview the day before (noon-5 p.m.) at Colette Cosentino Atelier + Gallery. And then it’s by appointment, but Cosentino says she’s “there daily and most afternoons.” Below: a work by Cosentino.

Does SB really want Barney’s purple dream hotel? I couldn’t even find a pic of that color on an Exterior wall on google images. Let’s hope the review board agrees with my sentiment.
There is an image of a door painted this purple shade. Seems most folks use it as an accent wall. This is going to look awful on that corner which is in my neighborhood. Also, so not the ‘Santa Barbara’ vibe. I’m sure the clientele will be changing also along with the price. Maybe the purple is for the doggies in the dog park right next door to this place
Um, Hey Mary. The upper part of the Lemon Tree / Crocodile across the street from this place is painted purple… has been for a very long time. Did you ever notice this color in your “neighborhood”?

Anything that differs from the same old, sure makes the old people very, very testy.
SB is one of the only cities in the world where a dilapidated pile of festering junk is considered “historic” because some old lady remembers the people who lived there in 1960… The worst part? There are thousands such buildings in our little town. Thousands!

Mary, I agree with you and I am not old (I also lived in Samarkand for years). The Lemon Tree would be considered San Roque and is not directly attached to a quaint little neighborhood. That Quality Inn is a great little, affordable hotel, I hope it doesn’t change too much.
I think it will be interesting. That motel is so early 60’s. Its time it gets a facelift & some interest. I dislike grey (overdone to death) but this could bring something exciting to the hood!

Many hotels hire out a chain to help with managing day to day operations and also to provide a greater outreach to potential clientele. This is standard in the industry.
Yes- but a casino in Solvang? Considering the NO VACANCY signs all auto up on Thur/Fri, it just seems a bit…..much.
The ‘Arrive’ line done by Pali/house/society/whatever are really nice in other spots, and am happy to see their interest in this area of Santa Barbara. My hope is that this will also bring new food and drink options in this section of town. (I know there are several things planned further up State, like Lama Sama Dog or whatever we are collectively calling it)… but would love to see a little more fill in on De La Vina itself.
(I don’t have much love for the Starbucks and would really love to see this become a dining location, but I won’t hold my breath).
Es Cochero, the old Mackenzie Market is going to become a coffeehouse/restaurant. The owners are planning on making this location a destination for all of Santa Barbara county. I just read an article in carpinteria magazine about the couple that owns teddy’s seafood & brass bird coffee in carpinteria they also own several other businesses and own the Mackenzie market and are planning on doing a dual concept of their places in Carpinteria.

Oh I know! I am walk past this location frequently… and while I am sure there are permits and such they’re waiting on… I see no signs of life over there. Do you know what the latest delay is? It also is such a good/welcome spot!
