I admire you and your writing a great deal but disagree about a new restaurant: if they open and charge full freight, one should expect it to be good and right…otherwise, don’t open or offer a reasonable discount for a few weeks…

Many thanks to you and Bell’s for sharing the risotto recipe. I believe amount of tomatoes is not 10 lbs. but a #10 can. A #10 can (commonly used in restaurant food service) refers to the cans volume, not the weight of its contents. A #10 can of Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes label reads “NET WT 105 OZ (6 LBS 9 OZ) “ This would be especially important detail for someone trying to scale back the recipe to fewer portions.
The jest is perfect, prettiest mediocre restaurants. It surprises me often how much money we spend on average food with all the ingredients we have available. I just don't see much imagination. We recently had dinner at Bar Lou and the food was expensive and very good but, like Rare Society, the music was too loud to have a conversation. Maybe people drink more when they can't talk or the tables turn over more quickly.

When there's enough housing for all who want to live here it will be a significantly less pleasant place to live.
Wish we had a greater array of ethnic restaurants other than Mexican and Italian. Yes, there are a few. A friend of mine some in jest says "Santa Barbara has the prettiest mediocre restaurants." Monterey has far better restaurants than SB - why?

I wanted to see if I could get your opinion on the harbor restaurant (a local institution for many years). It looks like some folks that have no idea about restaurants opened after the restaurant had closed down.
I was there last week with a few friends and it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. I’m 64 years old and I eat out 3-4 times a week.
I didn’t want to leave a review or talk to management that was not present but what a terrible experience from the service to the food and then the decor.
I don’t think they hired a designer or consultant and it shows. It feels cold and sterile. Please don’t go in to the restrooms because they were not touched. I think they ran out of money. They are discussing! After spending close to $600 for a group of 5 people.
What a disappointment. I don’t think anyone in our group will ever return.

I think you gave up too soon. I moved here with my friends 39 years ago from Scottsdale/Phoenix. Recently I checked Zillow and home prices are almost the same there as here in SB. And Phoenix has had over 30 record high temps this year. So how's the weather in Bend? 44 as the high and close to freezing at night? I'm perfectly happy to be passe here in SB.

Hundreds of miles of public beaches, 3000 square miles of National Forest, multiple State parks, dozens of county and city parks, all availably to a population of <300k, and you want to replace a popular, healthy, open space that generates millions in tax revenue and is enjoyed by 10's of thousands of people annually with low income housing onto what is essentially an old oil exploration toxic fund site?

They will never build affordable housing there. Too nice a view to "waste" on those who aren't billionaires.
Perhaps Sandpiper will close and the site can be used for a public park and affordable housing instead. How nice would that be.
Passé is what people say about SB when it didn't work out for them.
