Re: the door - I love giving things a new home via posting it as free on Craigslist. Maybe you've ruled that out already. Someone enterprising or scheming or just in need of a door will show up and take if off your hands and they will make use of it somehow. Much better than the trash. Donating can be a hassle if something's big or bulky, so I end up posting stuff as free quite often. It's also great for giving away plants you don't want. I've even had people dig them out of my yard while I watched. LOL.
They were at the SB Natural History Museum pop-up. The museum could tell you if they’ll be available again.

I really dislike the awful noise barrier wall design choice. They're so ugly. As soon as they went up in Carp I gasped. They're at once '70s and hideously pomo late '90s at the same time. They look cheap and out of place here. Why not just do plain cinder block and cover it in creeping fig, or something else that will climb? If I had all the money in the world, I'd offer to pay to clad them in local stone. Wouldn't that be nice! Ha.
Well I hope Acme can forgive me for being so awful and saying mean things about them wanting to paint Paradise grey and calling the food at The Lark "Brooklyn 2010." They've really honored the community, the downtown, and the Paradise even with this return to origins via La Paloma. I drove past yesterday and I am THRILLED about the new neon sign, and the restaurant looks incredible. Food looks very good and i look forward to eating there. Despite my nastiness, I'm really just overly sentimental about changes to what I view as institutions which manifests in the form of acting like a troll. I'm actually really nice and a regular patron of the Acme group (though I can't deny I do not like the Lark and I really miss Les Marchands!). Haha. This is an awesome win for downtown so bravo Acme and thank you! On another note, I hope that somehow this will lead to a relaxation of the terrible prohibition on neon signage downtown. Neon is gorgeous, draws crowds, and could literally help reinvigorate our downtown. It is made by skilled craftsmen, it's 100 years old, and it graces the exteriors of gorgeous and historic institutions in world-class cities like Paris, New York, Vienna, etc. Let there be light!
I can't decide what to think about the hotel. Truly torn. Design looks great, and timeless. Economic boost to downtown Carpinteria seems undeniable. But at the same time, it would certainly change things there forever. I don't know what to think. My husband and I were recently talking about the ways in which tourists change a place forever. Pre-COVID, we spent a lot of time in restaurants popular with tourists, like Loquita (which we love). It's not just more bodies on the streets, or unfamiliar people. Tourists *can* bring an energy I don't like. They sometimes have almost a hyperness about them, especially in groups. I feel like dining next to a table of tourists tends to have a really different feeling than dining next to locals. It's tough to explain, it's a giddiness, a touch of the cavalier that comes with being somewhere new and exciting, and somewhere you kind of also have no skin in the game. Very tough call.
Kenmore Place is my favorite new listing in a while. So much potential. I think - based on obsessively analyzing its photos - that there is a quirk with the second bedroom. It may only be accessible off the master, or via the outdoors. Could possibly be addressed. But if that's true, it makes a family sale tough, which could be the only reason it's still on the market. I miss the days of going to open houses pre-COVID. Would love to pass through this little beauty. Sure gives 884 Cheltenham a run for its money at current asking.

Re: the Brownie Apartments: there has been more than painting going on w/o permits. The residents have been going thru a living hell with major landscaping, construction, etc., all w/o permits or notices of work to be done. Rents were raised well beyond legal limits. Workers are there starting at 7:15, 6-7 days/week. It’s truly a shame that 8 more units of workforce housing is being lost due to this narcissistic businessman & his rich & famous silent partner.

Beyond thrilled to hear about the neon! Bravo, Acme. Wonder how they swung that one with the city? The sign commission haaaaates neon. Which is such a shame. Anything grandfathered in is allowed to remain, but they deny neon is historical and don’t allow anything new. Neon is a historic craft, made by skilled artisans, beautiful, warm, and inviting. Not to mention instagrammable. We need more (good) neon, not less. Old photos of the city show endless neon signs but HLC doesn’t want to hear about it. We should revise this policy once and for all. I’m not exaggerating when I say it could help bring downtown back to life.
