There Will Be a Courtyard by Marriott on State Street

••• The plans submitted in advance of the February 2 meeting of the city’s Historic Landmarks Commission indicate that the “El Prado” La Quinta Inn and Suites (1601 State Street, at the northwest corner of Arrellaga) will be a Courtyard by Marriott when the construction is done.

••• A notice has been posted that on February 7 the city’s Architectural Board of Review will discuss a new four-story, 90-unit apartment building at 418 N. Milpas (extending down to Gutierrez). That includes the former La Sumida Nursery where Bob Ludwick had planned an event-space-with-food-trucks called the Greenhouse. UPDATE 2/7: Someone apparently jumped the gun on this one, and it got pushed to some later date. And in the meantime, the Greenhouse is still in the works.

••• Surprising no one, the county extended its indoor mask mandate till early March.

••• The artist known as Rex Orange County is playing the Santa Barbara Bowl on June 1.

••• A. gave me a notecard from Terratorie with a map of Santa Barbara neighborhoods, and I suspect some of you might like it, too. A 13″ by 19″ version is also available.

I am surprised at how massive of an expansion the El Prado (aka Marriot Courtyard) has been — and while I am happy to see they’re keeping the great “El Prado” sign and colors, along with some knock-off midcentury lighting — I really have no idea how the new section will match the original cinderblock building style — are there renderings anywhere?
