Thanks for the explanation!
I was golfing Sandpiper and one of my friends, a pilot, saw them and said they are guides for planes flying into SB Airport. It makes more sense than remnants of a pier- those columns are really, really high. It doesn’t seem to be the right scale for an old pier. I wonder if SBA might disabuse us of this theory.
Regarding the trash can look-a-like at 1015 Orilla Del Mar; it’s an Air Release / Vacuum Relief Valve housing, for the city water system. which serve to minimize water hammer, as well as air intake during a main break. Not something you would want in front of your house! I wonder if this confuses the trash collectors?
I always wondered how such industrial and hard scrabble businesses survived in the area Whitcraft is so close to the beach. Then I worked in the Vercal building for a few years. Between the sewage treatment facility, Marborg's portapotty cleaning space, and the transfer station just across the 101, well, that can be an exceptionally _fragrant_ area when the conditions are right.
the quincentennial plaque
It is part of the El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park but across the street in the courtyard of the little adobe (with the dying garden) next to the Post Office.
Afraid not, but another worthy guess.

I think it’s at Santa Barbara County Courthouse.
No, but that's a good guess.

Is this one of the commemorative plaques on the walkway under they flags in El Paseo / “Street in Spain”?

What a FANTASTIC journey. Thank you for inviting us along.
The county's South Board of Architectural Review has been considering a bunch of proposed improvements for a while now. From the October 15 agenda: "Request of Scott Branch, architect for the owner Sharon Kussman to consider Case No. 20BAR-00000-00141 for Final Approval of a new 1,340 square foot canopy over the existing fuel dispensers, minor exterior finish changes to chimney, wall section bollard replacement, and roof replacement to standing seam metal. The following currently exists on the parcel: a convenience store, 3 fuel dispensaries, one unused island, trash enclosures and landscaping planters. The proposed project will not require grading. The property is a 12,196.8 square foot parcel zoned C-1 and shown as Assessor’s Parcel Number 005-177-005 located at 2285 Lillie Avenue in the Summerland area, First Supervisorial District." The item was approved, with some changes to the planters. More recently, a request for a large illuminated sign ("approximately 24.9 square feet") received a lot of blowback from neighboring businesses and residents in advance of the meeting on November 5. Here's one letter submitted to SBAR: "The gas station is open 24/7, therefore, there will [be] no 'extinguishing the lights' at any time from dusk to dawn. Is this allowable within the current zoning? Is the zoning in Summerland different than on Coast Village Road where another one of these gas stations was remodeled and does not have this highly illuminated signage. 600 LED watts on two sides of the building. Some residents will have direct line of vision seeing 1200 LED watts. There will be a glow the entire community will see. Ocean rescue lights are 300 LED watts. This proposal is the equivalent of 4 search lights illuminating out over Summerland every day all night." I'm trying to find out what SBAR decided. If anyone out there knows, feel free to chime in. UPDATE: "The project went back to SBAR on 11/5 and was granted final approval," said the SBAr planner. "The project included two wall signs, which were both externally illuminated. The pole sign was part of the original proposal but was ultimately removed from this application."
Any idea of what is going on with the old gas station in Summerland?
Me too! Me too!
The city parking/meter patrol also cruise and ticket in the city parking lots. I learned this the hard way for forgetting to attach my updated annual sticker to my license plate and got a ticket for it!
I want "Surfers" as a wallpaper, please! :D
Saw construction inside Molly's this weekend.
the “Restore Ojai” development will be reviewed publicly a few more times. the locals came out united against this project. they discovered a trend where developers are seeking out school districts who are strapped for cash to lease public land. this approach yields many conflicts of interest that bypass the good of the community.
Wow. These are simply delightful!
You got it!

I've been hearing the rumor about Handlebar going in here for a long time now. I thought there was no way it was true since so much time had elapsed. So exciting! Go Aaron and Kim! This is a dozen good things rolled into one. Repurposing charming old buildings, great local business, and walkable coffee for the Bungalow Haven and Lower Riviera neighborhoods.
Activity in Mollie’s space. Maybe by Olio y Limone owners?
I’ve asked a couple times lately, to no response. It's possible they'd rather not share it with a media outlet, for whatever reason, and that's certainly their prerogative.
