The Latest on the Tri-County Produce Development

••• The redevelopment of 335 S. Milpas Street is on the May 26 agenda of the Architectural Board of Review, and I vaguely recall that we knew the Tri-County Produce building would be spared (“with a new 4,071-square-foot addition, new 1,047-square-foot outdoor patio, and reconfiguration and expansion of the existing parking lot to include a total of 45 automobile parking spaces”), but I can’t find any record of that, so here are the latest renderings (courtesy Cearnal Collective). To the east will be “a new 45-unit (including three very-low-income units and one moderate-income unit), four-story residential building with a roof deck and ground-level parking garage containing 47 automobile parking spaces.” The rounded corners are a nice touch.

••• The Eddy and Favorites have partnered on a version of the classic souvenir T-shirt. It’s available at both shops.

••• The Barber Shop will be moving into 429 State Street (Haley/Gutierrez)—owner Jorge Salgado bought the building. UPDATE “The new location at 429 State Street will host a soft opening on Saturday, June 6, from 5–8 p.m., with an official grand opening expected in early July,” according to a press release.

••• “Those tile Ns are found throughout town,” commented J. about last weekend’s Where in Santa Barbara…? “One is on the end of the La Cumbre Road overpass on the Hope Ranch side. For a decade I’ve wondered who put them there and what do they mean?” Anyone know more about it?

••• I’m thinking of going to Paris San Luis Obispo this summer. Anything I shouldn’t miss?

••• From R.: “I was walking from Cabrillo to Butterfly Beach and I thought I saw the top of the infamous Red Freeway Stiletto. It was on the lawn of the house at Channel Drive and Fairway Road. I attached a badly zoomed-in picture so you’ll have to see it for yourself in person or take my word for it.” I went over and applied my tall-person skills to the problem. (I wouldn’t normally shoot over a fence into someone’s yard, but perhaps this qualifies as an asking-for-it situation?) A friend who knows the homeowner, however, says the shoe is actually a replica of the famous Highway 101 stiletto (stolen last year), made as a gift for the man who apparently has everything, and it has been there for quite a while.

Are you related to Ginni debruynkops? My sorority sister? Northwestern University class 1964? Married to Ross MacKenzie?

Those N are part of a geocache hunt that someone put up around town back in 2022. Glued those tiles to city property, historic sites as well as personal property without approval. Have been trying to get the city to remove them for years.

Might be part of some other GPS/location based game other than geocaching.com? That would have never been allowed to be listed on the game site. They have very specific rules to avoid situations like this. Just stating that it is definitely not a “geocache”.

Geocaching.com may have the trademark on the term but there are still plenty of folks that use the term as a generic catch-all for clue-based location finding hunts.

When in SLO, dine on the patio at Piadina one evening (Hotel SLO) and have the Herb Roasted Chicken. Absolutely to die for. Live music on the weekend.

Erik: Whenever we go to SLO, we approach it through See Canyon. The drive alone is worth it. Take the San Luis Bay Drive exit off the 101, head west, and turn right on See Canyon Road. Take a right at Prefumo Canyon Road, a T intersection. From there you get incredible views up the coast. The views are more for the passenger than the driver–the road requires full attention to drive. En route, stop at Gopher Glen Apple Farm, a quaint store that will have many varieties of apples throughout the season–the selection depends on when you go. My dog always likes to visit the chicken coop.

The digital renderings of the Tri County parcel might just be showing the new construction and not the existing. A site plan might provide a clear answer. Tough design project to provide density and make it less generic.

Super happy for Jorge with his new location on State St. He was one of our business neighbors on the 1200 block of State St. and will be missed. He’s a great example to entrepreneurs everywhere of the art of the possible and we hope his new location is a huge success.

Luna Red in SLO ~ such a wonderful patio right next to the mission with delicious tapas. Giuseppe’s Italian in the same area. The best Italian in SLO as well as very good cocktails. I love to sit at the bar for lunch or dinner. The Black Sheep ~ a great bar downtown on a side street ~ reminds me of a back east bar.

In SLO – go for a hike in the Irish Hills. Catch a show at the Fremont. Brunch at the Madonna Inn. Oyster Loft in Pismo. If you go to Morro Bay, eat at Tognazzini’s Dockside 2. The Garden Shop in Cambria; also, Moonstone Cottages in Cambria.

Don’t miss the Fiscalini Preserve in Cambria – 400+ acres of oceanfront and forest in the middle of town. There are many great trails throughout the forest that most people don’t see.

Must go to Nate’s on Marsh, best and most lively restaurant in town, especially on Martini Mondays.
