Summerland Is Getting a Bookstore

The Garde shop in Summerland is closing, reports S., and everything is 50 percent off. The staffer I spoke with said they’re not closing till August, but a lot of the inventory has already been snapped up—understandably, for the store has always had impeccable taste. The other locations (in L.A., Dallas, and a forthcoming one in New York City) will continue to exist.

The next tenant of the 1921 building, meanwhile, will be a bookstore, possibly with a café component. And the unofficial word, which I was unable to confirm, is that the proprietor is Montecito resident Victoria Jackson, a self-described “entrepreneur, cosmetics pioneer, medical research catalyst, author, and philanthropist” (and, per WWD, “one of Meghan Markle’s closest friends”). The bookstore is sure to be a welcome addition to the town, which could use something besides home decor.

A bookstore! Rubs eye and re-reads it. That is amazingly great news!

Garde is a beautiful space. Went in today and was treated so rudely that I won’t shed a tear to see them go. Bring on the books !

Agreed! Every time I go into Guard they are unfriendly and pretentious. Bye!

They charged me more than my item price tag so when I went back to get a price adjustment, she told me the higher price was “the new price” and everything was final sale and would not make the correction. She begrudgingly offered a “one – time only refund”. Completely blew my mind. Insane!

I went to garde the day after this post and it was SO busy! Give the girls some slack, there was just two of them dealing with so many people! They did a great job and they will be missed!

A bookstore is so exciting! Especially with a coffee shop included. That would be such a fun addition

I would be thrilled to work here. I am recently retired and can’t think of anything better than working in my hometown.
