I’ve taken the PET class and been to Mbonisi’s tennis coaching. I highly recommend them both. Mbonisi is an amazing teacher no matter your skill level or age. Austin is a terrific trainer. My tennis game and fitness have improved so much all thanks to them. The PET classes are so fun - perfect way to start a Sunday!
Thanks again Erik. I have made a little nameplate for the artwork. Residents have been thanking me for “my” sleuthing but you get the credit!
Hazards in the Funk Zone
Could we petition to have jackass free zones? Thx!
The picture in question is the Santa Barbara Inn on Cabrillo/Milpas.
I guess I am a male Karen but I am a fan of the Spanish Colonial look. This belongs in Ventura or Oxnard. It will not age well.
Looks interesting. My only question is "where are we going to get the water to support it?" Drought is here to stay and only going to get worse.
I have eaten at Costa several times. The food is outstanding, drinks are excellent, the room is beautiful and service is superb. The best part is that its been a secret spot, easy to get reservations because they don't really advertise or post much on IG. SHHH . . . don't tell anyone :)
What is happening with the Best Western Plus hotel property across from La Cumbre Plaza on Upper State St.?
Is this at La Arcada Plaza on the Figueroa Street entrance?

This gold fire hydrant is on east Figueroa Street near the entrance to La Arcada!

It's for the cat!
Honestly, it would be a nice welcome change — and keeps people/tourists/LA in a central spot. The architecture looks beach appropriate — albeit a very southern california 202x-predictable take on that. And yes, all those finishes won't age too well in the constant salty marine air... but in a way, that will quickly make it funky again in ten years. So by 2032, this will be full of funky aged culture. And in that regard, I'm kinda all for it!
this is so much cooler than the ground level mini-golf i was envisioning
I work in the FZ every day and this looks great to me. Now I just wish the guy that's going to level the cute green cottage across from Tyger, Tyger would reconsider his behemoth, gawd-awful project. Save the heart of the FZ.
Thanks to Arvand for labeling anyone with any feedback a Karen. Inspiring project with a great feel, especially the staircase. Way too many finishes though. Looks bad now, will look even worse in 20 years. Less corten steel and wood cladding, and more of the corrugated metal and cement finishes they've also included would be good and in keeping with the area. Corten steel is beautiful, but isn't relevant to our area. The connectedness to the outdoor areas is particularly compelling.
Thanks for this refreshing take on change. To put it in other words - Change is inevitable. We just need to affect it to get the desired outcome. And this change should work for literally everyone except for the Karens of the world.
I agree with you. Hopefully the takeout counter Erik mentioned they'll have will be robust.
One of the wonderful things about going the the East Beach Grill was that you could bike there and grab a non-fussy, messy meal and chat with friends in a relaxed atmosphere. Families could bring their little ones and their fuzzy four legged companions to mingle with surfers, v-ball players and others. Almost everyone barefoot and most donning just swimsuits. Such a shame that this place went to more "formal" where beach sand is not welcome. Would have loved to have seen a more casual, more Barbarian friendly venue went in, but, oh well.
There's going to be a lot of outdoor seating for the restaurant proper, as well as a takeout counter.
I don't really get the Reunion concept given the location. It feels especially weird during COVID, when a lot of people still prefer to get food to go. From what I've read this is a sit down, table service restaurant. A delicious, fresh, yet casual counter-service restaurant seems like a more appropriate fit to me, but maybe I'm just projecting what I want. I was envisioning riding bikes there to grab a gourmet sandwich or salad and eat on the sand. Not to sit down for table service, and especially not indoors. The formality just feels out of step with the location. Hopefully they'll have a to-go window with beach-friendly eats?
I believe you toss wee children into that nook over the bed on the Mesa house - with popcorn - to watch movies? Leslie
The food at Costa is fantastic. Next best thing to Apertivo when seeking Italian cuisine but with a more spacious dining area and ocean views.
Agree. Beautiful to ride the Union Pacific RT Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo in the springtime. Hollister Ranch, Sudden Ranch, Cojo Jalama, VSFB, Casmalia, Guadalupe- the vast amount of open land is simply jaw dropping at times. Pack a nice lunch and DO IT!
Public access being required at Hollister sickens me. What a misguided and stupid thing. I have no skin in the game except an interest in there being more “wild” places where nature can flourish, versus fewer. Our beaches are polluted, filled with trash and dog poop bags. People hound the seals in Carpinteria, or even let their dogs into the protected area during breeding season. Dogs (and I love them, and am an owner myself) off leash chase birds. And people leave their waste behind and let their kids use the sand at a latrine. Keeping established public access (like the story up north of the guy who tried to close off an easement trail after buying a house) is also a lot different then demanding new access. 500 people a day is absurd and the tax dollar money that will go to organizing this and operating it is crazy. Let’s keep some wild places wild. Humans have done enough damage.
