Tess: Agreed! And talk about car-dependent housing out there in that odd no man's land. Will it have 14 tenant parking spaces available? It must, because there's zero street parking! The description from the City's website further states, "The lot is located on the southeast corner of the Calle Real/Los Carneros roundabout and is zoned Office Institutional (OI)." Doesn't sound like it's zoned for housing. Maybe because it's a goofy spot!
The “echô 1926” at 801 De la Guerra Terrace might once have been "hecho 1926" - Spanish for "made in 1926."
Great sleuthing! Love it. D'Alfonso also designed the old McConnell's plant over on Milpas as well as Sambo's (now Chad's) on Cabrillo.
Totally agree Mark! Very tasteless design that does not blend in well with the rural feel of the surrounds.
Really, that’s the best justification you can come up with, “normal” (lol, so out of touch, btw)? I bet you call yourself “christian”, too.
Well said Mark! Lazy design, ugly. Only a computer could come up with this and only an esthetically insensitive human could approve it. Goleta send them back to the drawing board... FWIW - I think the location is perfect use.
The Heritage Goods and Supply book for children is fantastic. I just reordered after receiving my first one. Going to give as Mothers Day gifts for my daughters to share with my grandchildren. Also they do have a second store in Solvang. What a nice and clever bunch of people associated with the business.
The rendering of the Los Carneros Roundabout mixed-use structure can be found on the first page of a book called ‘Architects Who Tried to Kill California’. It is a lazy clump of boxes with absolutely no respect for the city, or the land. Its initial sin is facing away from the street (the demonic sign of a Strip Mall). But it is compounded by no attempt for rhythm or unity. Low cost construction does not have to be hideous. There are vernaculars with Industrial, folk, and Farm designs that are inexpensive. This architectural firm should be sent to Houston where no one cares ‘bout nothin’!
Glad to hear that Handlebar will stay open later. They were one of my go to (pre-pandemic) places for an afternoon cup and cookie.
You are free to spend your time and money buying land, hiring architects, procuring permits, and contractors to build an apartment building and then rent them out at below market rates to low income households. How many people do you think will build something they know they would lose money on?
Why are they building a bunch of high rent one bedrooms when we are trying to find space to build a bunch of housing and low income housing for the shortage we are facing? This blows my mind yet we say we don’t have space to build. This is proving We have plenty of spots like this and bigger throughout Goleta and Santa Barbara, if we are going to start popping up apartments like this!
The handheld menu lists the items in Spanish on one side and English on the other.
Thank you for the cheerful thoughtful walk along the paths and roads below APS. Santa Barbara is my hometown and I have not lived there since 1960 but I have roots! Deep roots! I'm looking forward to traveling with you more! When I do visit, I drive all over because, as a child in SB and growing up I walked absolutely everywhere and I never get tired of returning to ant part of SB! And the trees! Oh my! I remember when the El Paseo and Dela Guerra Plaza with its shops really did exist - don't get me started!
Costra is a thin layer of cheese that is cooked on a griddle (plancha) on both sides until it's crisp. It is then placed on a tortilla and topped with whatever meat or vegetable choices available. It still amazes me how many people get triggered by Spanish language menus or Spanish language commercials on English speaking channels in SB (36% latino pop in the city and 47% majority in the county). However, it's applauded when we travel abroad and find menus in English and see English speaking shows or tours. I agree that the English translation should be on the menu and prices displayed. I'm bilingual and bicultural and while I get the creativity and sense of wanting to be different that may be driving their choice, it doesn't make much business sense to me to have your customers asking the staff to speak into the google translator or have to study a menu ahead of time as if there will be a quiz (which I guess there will be at the counter). Wouldn't you want people to take less time to order and have a faster checkout time?
I love taco bell, but I also love all Mexican food, especially all the food from Carlos.
Looking for a retired architect, or retired builder who would be able to oversee construction of new home being built in Santa Barbara area..
We (my friend and I) went to one of the tours of the estate as well. We didn't get tosee the outer strustures, jus the ground floor of the main building and the adjacent grounds. I just wanted to second the opinion that the estate should be turned into a park. It is such a waste to have it available for the handful of people only!
There is no official language in the U.S.

Sounds like a good menu. I really love some of those street tacos, especially Lengua.
I am the individual presented as being confused as to whether Soledad Ave is really a private street, a flatter of tires and basically unwelcoming to those who wish to stroll up our street. We posted a private street sign and the city illegally replaced it with their own sign and changed the name from North Soledad Ave to Soledad Ave. Your suspicion s are therefore support but I have the legal description on my Grant Deed. We have always welcomed strangers who just want to stroll, chat and look around. Your frantic camera “ on a mission” performance stood out from what seems natural and normal, and hence I engaged you. Life sometimes is not as unwelcoming as some people choose to paint it.
Thank you as always - exploring Santa Barbara by foot is truly the best. And yes, the Ab Fab reference reminded me why I enjoy your writing behind these walks.
Great spot for kids/family camps - Mr Kessler also owned Zaca Lake- and never spent a penny on any type of up-keep whatsoever….we’d drink beers with his #2 and beg him to improve the situation there…..
