••• From R.: “There’s a huge amount of roadwork on Cliff Drive from the roundabout near Hendry’s all the way to City College. The crews look to be installing large blue piping in the middle of the street. It has been going on for months and Cliff Drive is a mess now—steel plates, uneven road surface, detours, etc. We were wondering what the heck is going on and when will it end!” Cliff Drive is in the middle of a big transformation—well, middle might not be the right word, since construction is expected to go on for several more years. The blue pipe is the water main replacement, which has to happen before everything else (14 new crosswalks, four new traffic signals, wider sidewalks, and much more). There’s more info here (including more renderings), or if you’d rather read an article, head over to Noozhawk.

The renderings of Cliff Drive ‘after’ are misleading as the telephone/utility poles disappear. It is my understanding that the poles are NOT going to be put underground on the East Mesa (unlike West Mesa) because it us ‘too expensive. ‘ what happens to the funds from SCE that have been collecting all these years? And was the amount ($200k per annum) ever indexed for inflation? Mike Jordan doesn’t care because he lives in West Mesa. A fire hazard in addition to being a huge eyesore.
The roads are horrible all over the city. I live on the Mesa and it is a joke. De La Vina is pothole breeding ground. What are we doing?
Of the 17 views available on SB website – there are exactly 3 pedestrians, and 1 cyclist in total across all images. Is it really wise to make through traffic more difficult, spend millions of dollars, complicate further maintenance, and lose parking for this amount of foot traffic? I understand $27m is a grant and $6.8m is SB city money, but that’s still $34m of tax payer funds that could be used elsewhere. A water main repair is fully warranted, but why not work to repave some of our deteriorating streets elsewhere?
I watched the city council meeting on Tuesday and the same Jessica Grant, Transportation Planner with the city presented a plan for the Castillo street 101 underpass. It’s unbelievable that the new design is for ONE LANE going northbound from Montecito street. Anyone that lives or works in the are knows the area is already impacted by traffic at all hours of the day. One lane for everyone coming from the Mesa and SBCC, one lane for traffic coming from the harbor, one lane from West Beach. . . all converging into one lane going north under the 101.
