Katy Perry’s Foundation Wants to Build a Summer Camp in Goleta

••• According to Monday’s Architectural Board of Review agenda, the plan for the former U.S. Bank building at the Montecito Country Mart is to carve it into four retail spaces, all with entrances on the side pictured above.

••• Katy Perry’s Firework Foundation has submitted plans for conceptual review to the South Board of Architectural Review for a youth camp called Gratitude Canyon at 183 Winchester Canyon Road, a 110-acre lot at the northwest corner of Calle Real and Cathedral Oaks Road in Goleta. The Gratitude Canyon website describes it as “a place of inspiration and access for underserved youth from the surrounding region and local community, offering programming rooted in the arts, nature exploration, and creative expression. […] The proposal limits built structures to roughly 3% of the site, preserving approximately 97% of the property as open landscape including restored habitat areas, orchards, pathways, outdoor recreation spaces, and nature-based use areas.” And according to the SBAR agenda, the plan calls for “eight cabins, counselor housing, a director’s residence, gymnasium, dining hall, pool, and associated landscaping improvements of approximately 55,350 square feet.”

••• The Uptown Artists Open Studio Tour is May 2 and 3 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.): “Eleven Santa Barbara artists are opening their homes and studios for visitors to enjoy and savor art on this free self-guided tour. Meet the artists in their workspaces and discuss their art-making processes.” The online map is here, or you can pick up a printed one at the Santa Barbara Visitor Center (120 State Street).

••• The April 29 County Planning Commission agenda includes the subdivision of 29.66 acres, and the construction of 67 new single-family dwellings, at 477 Price Canyon Road and 9324 Highway 101 in Los Alamos. That’s to the right of the northbound Highway 101 off-ramp.

••• If anyone at the city’s parking department happens to read this, please consider repainting the arrows on the pavement at Parking Lot 8. It has become popular with folks heading to the Saturday farmers’ market, too many of whom don’t realize that the loop is supposed to be one-way, counterclockwise.

••• Someone recently asked whether the city has determined what it intends to do with the current Santa Barbara Police Department headquarters (215 E. Figueroa Street) once the new building is completed. “We are waiting for the results of the June election regarding the change to the City’s Charter to eliminate lease time restrictions before we move forward with further planning for the future of this site,” said City Administrator Kelly McAdoo.

••• From M.: “What’s the deal with the broken escalator at Santa Barbara Airport? It’s been roped off for months (years?) now, and no signs of repair.” The folks at SBA were kind enough to reply: “Parts for Escalator 1 are expected to arrive this week, with repairs scheduled shortly after. In addition, escalator handrail replacements will take place May 5–7, requiring each escalator to be taken out of service for a full day starting at 7 a.m. Work will proceed in phases, with one escalator serviced each day.”

••• Cowboy Junkies return to the Lobero Theatre on September 20 for a “a career-spanning show from The Trinity Session to their recent critically acclaimed album, Such Ferocious Beauty.” Let’s not ignore their first record, Whites Off Earth Now!!, and its haunting cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “State Trooper.”
