united also didn't bring back their direct flights santa barbara to and from chicago...
Prior to recent extreme storms and up to 2020, when I moved into a new home, I owned a condo in the shadow of three of the largest Eucalyptus Trees in town and feared them coming down in storms as well as exploding and setting the neighborhood on fire. YES... they are extremely combustible with a high level of oil in them and the explosions create a much greater span of embers and rapid fire spread. They are a hazard all over town...
The backstory is that the night before the birthday party my friend's husband broke his hip so the party was canceled and the shoe never got its debut! Full circle!
Carp! I just contacted the "new owners" and they are going to drop it by my house so I can re-paint it and use it (finally) for my friend's 80th! I told him I'll take it back to the field on 101 and it should be good for another 10 years! I'll send you some photos!
Well, here's the story behind the red shoe! 10 years ago August my best friend was celebrating a milestone bday. I had been with her somewhere and we had seen a giant red stiletto shoe. She got such a kick out of it / her husband had one made a surprise for her party. Sadly, he broke his hip the night before its debut so it went into storage and eventually on the street for disposal! I love seeing it every time I drive up or down the highway. Her big big birthday is this August so if you could connect me to its new owner I would love to borrow it/ restore it/ surprise my friend (again!) and then drop it back off on highway 101!
Curious how many guns were turned in? How many had been used in a crime?
Fascinating, Jack. You have wonderful stories about these parts!
My great great grandfather planted many eucalyptus trees on his ranch as wind breaks in the 1860’s. They used to line the old highway ( cut down in the 1950’s when the highway became the freeway) line the railroad tracks ( cut down in the 1970’s to give the new owner’s a better view of the ocean) but still there between the pastures and orchards. The smell was wonderful the debris horrid, a beautiful vision and a terror during wild fires. Great as a windbreak as long as it was too strong.
I drove into the Seminary, curious as I love to photograph SB architecture. Within 2 minutes a man (caretaker?) came out and gruffly told me I had to leave immediately. He should be thankful that I didn't refer to it as what was stuck in my head: "Pedophile Village" ???? [Thank you for celebrating-or holding accountable-our town!]
Gorgeous ocean and city views, awesome modern flow to downstairs and lovely historic details at 519 East Pedregosa - thanks for highlighting
1227 Calle Cerrito Alto for $2.5mil and only 15 pictures?! Give me a break.
On font alone I'm guessing Broad Street Oyster Co
It’s not even the spending on salaries on current employees, it’s the spending on the pensions for people who have only ever sat behind a desk. Save pensions for fire and police. Make desk workers get 401ks like the rest of us.
I am the owner of that property on Park Lane and removed the Eucalyptus trees. While we have lived in the property for over twenty years, in the last few we have lost three of the Euc’s there to rain/wind. During the last large storm one took out an irreplaceable Live Oak, damaged our roof, and home. The Euc’s are beautiful there, unquestionably, but just don’t form a deep enough root system so it’s a problem and further exacerbated by the required asymptomatic trimming for the SCE power lines. If there was a way to protect the native Oaks and the structure, I would have kept them happily. But due to the poor root stability it was not worth the risk to the native Oaks, structure or utility lines. We will plant something native, which won’t compete with the Oaks or cause trimming issues with the utilities lines. It’s obviously controversial but I don’t see the other option of topping them as a better solution.
The airport also has a pin available instead of the big lanyard. It’s about the size of a dime with a sunflower face and a message “I support the sunflower,” which is more discreet. Both are free.
Thank you for writing this very informative piece!
Do you happen to know what’s going on with what looks like an abandoned east half of the Pepper Tree Inn on upper State St? I see people going into the entrance to the hotel driveway, but the right side looks like they maybe started a Reno, but have since stopped?
Alright let’s all relax. In the town, they could ask $20 hr, and you could still have to circle the block to find parking.
Okay, fair. Thanks for the formulas. Can you plug in the actual numbers for us so we can see? If it’s a big story - which it very well may be - then let’s get the details so we can actually hold someone accountable.
How about the city of SB fires some of the dozens of highly overpaid do-nothing middle managers who suck up millions a year in compensation while producing absolutely nothing in return instead of reducing our series and raising our fees and taxes? We literally have the lowest performance per employee of any city in the state. We also have the highest number of city employees per capita. And they STILL CANT DO ANYTHING RIGHT. Total budget / # of employee = output per employee Total city population / # of employees = largest % in the state. Instead of reducing the public's services. Cull the dead weight. We could lose hundreds of people and not even notice a reduction in services. The city is so poorly managed it's only a matter of time before its insolvent. Remember, these people give themselves raises and more time off every year while exporting their duty to Consultants and outsourced entities and reducing every aspect of what they are supposed to provide. On every measure, a failure.
I remember years ago one of those Eucs on Park lane failing over and killing someone. That’s why they are called widow makers.
Eucalyptus Trees are very flammable. During the fires they burst into flames with an audible boom sound. Our neighbor has a grove of old and dying eucalyptus trees and last year 2 trees experienced spontaneous combustion and we thought the whole hill would explode. The Carp Fire dept was here immediately . They are remarkable fire fighters.

How's the murder investigation going concerning the victim who lived on Park Lane?
