You said it all. The Public Market has worked hard to bring diverse options for everyone from the single crowd enjoying tapas, families wanting an all in one stop dining, date night before a movie, now a deli that’s going to smash the market. My mouth was watering just looking at those sandwiches.
Nortons is really good, but another deli is always welcome.
Well said Erik! On both accounts!
Yes please! Very excited about Wexler’s Deli coming to town. An excellent pastrami sandwich is my guilty pleasure.
I don’t know what Caitlin is thinking (also hate lame Debbie downers) This going to crush it! Perfect addition to the public market. I really hope they make their own bagels. Also hope they have enough space.
Agree 100%! Kudos to those that take the risks to bring us new and delicious dining options. As a former small business owner, operating in this town can be a challenge even without negative public comments. Excited to try this new option!
Santa Barbara is a pretty meaty town, it seems to me. I eat much less meat than I used to, but when I do eat it, I want it to be good, and Wexler's is famous for being excellent. Plus, I'll be first line for the bagels and smoked fish. This next part is for everyone, because there have been a bunch of comments like this lately. Heaven knows I'm not the most positive person on the planet, but when a business announces its intention to open here, can we all try to be welcoming? Or at least keep any doubts to ourselves? I think we all want a supportive environment for new businesses—restaurants, in particular. Imagine how it feels when the first comment is from someone pooh-poohing their chances. Whenever I'm faced with writing about something that I'm personally not into, I try to remind myself that every small business is someone's dream. And just because it's not my thing doesn't mean that many other people won't be excited about it.
What this town could really use are real, properly made, (edible) bagels and a real, honest-to-goodness kosher deli. Heck, I'd take a Norm's over anything currently operating here! So in my opinion, Wexler's is going to do well as there are NO decent/good delicatessens anywhere near us. This is a town after all that thinks Jack's offers an edible bagel and Three Pickle's a proper sandwich... Neither of those establishments would last a week in LA, SF or NYC. As for Norton's ? Sysco...
Cool, but doubtful this town like giant meat sandwiches enough to keep this afloat.
21 W. Montecito is a few blocks from me. Interesting site for a hotel, the 101 on one side and the train station on the other.
Yes- but a casino in Solvang? Considering the NO VACANCY signs all auto up on Thur/Fri, it just seems a bit…..much.
Mary, I agree with you and I am not old (I also lived in Samarkand for years). The Lemon Tree would be considered San Roque and is not directly attached to a quaint little neighborhood. That Quality Inn is a great little, affordable hotel, I hope it doesn't change too much.
Oh I know! I am walk past this location frequently... and while I am sure there are permits and such they're waiting on... I see no signs of life over there. Do you know what the latest delay is? It also is such a good/welcome spot!
Regarding Hotel 21 West, perhaps 21 West Montecito Street?
Es Cochero, the old Mackenzie Market is going to become a coffeehouse/restaurant. The owners are planning on making this location a destination for all of Santa Barbara county. I just read an article in carpinteria magazine about the couple that owns teddy’s seafood & brass bird coffee in carpinteria they also own several other businesses and own the Mackenzie market and are planning on doing a dual concept of their places in Carpinteria. You should check out the article.
Many hotels hire out a chain to help with managing day to day operations and also to provide a greater outreach to potential clientele. This is standard in the industry.
Must have pipeye truck at big brand after 7 pm every day except monday i think. Delicious, Well 7-Eleven now is closed and joins the abandon buildings. It just makes Milpas look more dilapidated. I think it's going to be the future sight of a mix Hotel and Apartments, joining the four-story at Capitol hardware to fully impact the area. Tobacco store opened up across from Super Rica conveniently located to all the schools. Nice picture it makes me sad to see the current state of the neighborhood. So much potential being run down chronically on the east side
appreciate the descriptions & your review!

I just noticed your ad for Broad Street Oyster Co so thought I would share my recent experience. My sister was visiting and loves lobster so thought we would try a lobster roll from Broad Street and I have to say it was delicious! We tried the cold with mayo version... it was served on a warm roll with a very light mayo dressing which didn't overpower the lobster flavor. I was also pleasantly suprised by the shaded and spacious back patio. I recommend giving it a try!
ROOAAAAR! You tell ‘em Mary
can you please look further into this hidden oaks golf course thing? I am not buying the BS statement they put out. If you actually walk the course, the only parts that are being maintained are those visible from the street/bike path/rental house. There are wide swaths that they have let fallen into an overgrown apocalyptic disaster. It’s on Airbnb and being marketed as an event venue. Is it zoned for that? What is the timeline to open the golf course to the public (if that’s even REALLY the plan still)?! Are we really going to let something that was open to the public for over 50 years just slip away? Totally ridiculous and I am surprised this is just being written about.
Thanks ES! Running a shop for ten years out of 150 sq feet is no small feat. We hope you’ll be pleased shopping in a normal sized store! There will be no shortage of charm. And running two stores during a pandemic was not feasible (gulp). -Your friends at Mate Gallery
The 'Arrive' line done by Pali/house/society/whatever are really nice in other spots, and am happy to see their interest in this area of Santa Barbara. My hope is that this will also bring new food and drink options in this section of town. (I know there are several things planned further up State, like Lama Sama Dog or whatever we are collectively calling it)... but would love to see a little more fill in on De La Vina itself. (I don't have much love for the Starbucks and would really love to see this become a dining location, but I won't hold my breath).
