Wait till you see what the gods have planned for Buttonwood! Local support is ZERO - considering Betty Willams helped forge open space forever in SYV- its ludicrous that her property be turned into a bonafide eye sore
No cafe survives for long in that location, I think it might be cursed.
Does anyone know if the Coral Casino house started assembling their management team? I would love to get in touch. I worked at Four Seasons 10+ years and started and ran the FINS juice club — now I own a local marketing agency. I can’t wait for them to reopen and would love to see if they need help with PR and marketing content.
Mmmm, salt-rising bread. MO you're right, the only way I know to get some, is to make some. https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/classic-american-salt-rising-bread-recipe
Courthouse stiffed a bunch of local people when they closed. The owners both could’ve closed in good fashion but choose to not pay a lot of people, bad karma!
Van de Kamp used to make. I remember that smell of it toasting, like stinky gym socks but boy was it good. Nowadays you have to make it if you want it. In California anyway.
My mom made avocado toast on salt-rising bread beginning in the 1950s. Yum! Where can I find that bread now?
Looks nice! Great location, fairly easy to pull over and jump out on that part of Santa Barbara St.
@ SB Snob, not sure how you interpreted my comment as being a "know it all". I was simply stating that I hope restaurants get with the times and include plant-based options that are creative and good, but also healthy. You sound just like so many restaurants who eyeroll, scoff at, and dismiss patrons who request vegan options/modifications. It's unfortunate.
The current Ballard Inn owners really botched the interior decor of this property. I was so disappointed when they started to overhaul this place like a cheap Silver Lake motel. Hopefully, whoever buys it can be more thoughtful and tasteful with their design choices instead of hurried, scattered and cheap. It's such a sweet inn in beautiful Ballard so I'm hoping the future owners do it right! ????
Update: 332 S. Salinas St.

Just read the article in the guardian. The only thing that’s absurd is the false claims throughout. Smelling cannabis plants cannot and does not cause “respiratory ill’s” or “asthma”. And if you don’t like the smell, move somewhere else. Plenty of people love the smell and would gladly take your proprieties off of your hands.
I have to smell the disgusting frying oil from people eating mercury infested seafood constantly while in California, you don’t see me contacting the news and lying through my teeth in response.
Love this, can’t wait to check it out!
Beyond excited about The Eddy. Neighborhood shops like this are so welcome — and quite frankly I am excited to browse the unique selection. Well done... and you bet I'll be supporting them with my patronage!
Will have to stop by and check them out!
Obviously folks now selling didn’t read up on property allowances, or the vibe in Valley for that matter. Who buys a property with intentions to use and fails to read the rules on how you can use it?
Whoever buys the Ballard Inn needs to be wary. Their original permit has strict limitations on the food service, and they can't hold special events. Someone reported them to the County, and now they're trying to work through a new Conditional Use Permit with the County.
A collective cheers is ringing thru the Valley this morning! The folks who bought and ransacked the Ballard Inn- most heinous act was firing the long time GM- followed by the turntable dj’ing by the interior designer nights…..good riddance to them
Jenna it sounds like you know so much about menu development and restaurants maybe you should open a restaurant and show all of us how it’s done?
Is it just me or what I love about Mate Gallery is how tiny it is?
I hope the expansion goes well — unlike the previous men's clothing shop they opened next door (briefly) to their current location. Gulp.
Don't get me wrong, I love the shop — but is a bigger footprint always success?
Agreed! And of course, this was a good 3 in the afternoon diversion from my own work and life. Hey Google, where did avocado toast originate? The answer seems fuzzy, but no mention of this quaint (the grounds are beautiful) hotel. Go figure.

Did anyone really think that Bungalow 805 concept would succeed? The belief that families want a members-only social club to take their kids to instead of childcare was completely misguided.
I'm curious about what others think regarding marketing like the Steward avocado toast claim. When I reach such apocryphal stories I tend to doubt the veracity of anything on their website.
