All businesses on that block were given a 3-day notice to remove their parklets. Granada seasons vary but on average there are ~7 shows per month. And the surrounding businesses have to close outdoor dining permanently to accommodate
because parking is limited and businesses need the drive by traffic
The argument over whether the beach is publicly- or privately-owned is a red herring. No matter the ownership, public access must be granted, like you said, to the wet sand.
While I don’t know why anyone would need to drive on State, I don’t mind the single lane one-way compromise. Perhaps it will encourage better bike etiquette with a more defined structure. It does feel like they should have removed all parklets on that block though.
Men do this all the time w/ their car collections, millions of dollars spent purchasing, restoring, state of art garages & or showrooms. We live in a country where we are free to pursue our passions, hers just happened to be shoes.
You can always park in a park house with access to state or in a street branching off. Saying you got to walk the whole strip is ridiculous. There is actually no difference to a "open state street", as mentioned here before there was no parking on state when it was open to vehicles.
Odessa is a Ukrainian town in the south of Ukraine. Very depressing name.
I think this is Sprouts. I guess I'd say the Goleta one but I'm not sure if I could tell them apart based just on this.
JCD - not sure if you were referring to Bell’s but they do not accept gratuity, so the 20% charge with no tip sets a good expectation. The only thing that it makes me pause on is that I wouldn’t order an expensive wine at Bell’s, it would arbitrarily inflate the price.
When I read the words “lazy river” my heart sank and my eyes rolled backwards. What a terrible addition to a historic property. Not everyone needs nor wants child friendly features. Let that be for Miramar. Shame shame.
It is a $9m dollar house; what do you expect, one pair of old flip flops? Two pair? How about a list of charitable donations, would that help? A bit judgy don’t you think?
That's a beautiful memory Laura!
Wow, they took the speakeasy theme literally with costumes? Ty Warner is a clown. What next? And what a shame the stone is obscured. That is the defining feature of the space.
We are huge fans of SYR in general, and had high hopes for this new concept. It feels very much like the old bar the at Biltmore in terms of decor (red banquettes, cheetah print, faux fur etc) and was cozy, but the flapper girl costumes on the waitresses felt really costume-ey and not on par with the elegance of the establishment as a whole. And the food options being only salted peanuts and caviar - feels Like a weird trap, given the types of seating (everyone has a full sized table at dining height) it would be easy and appropriate to serve apps.
The moral here is not to make assumptions about people; assumptions are just generalizations on a smaller scale.
The “speak easy” at syr is a big disappointment. The gorgeous stone was covered up by large gaudy booths and furniture. It was sad to see compared to the plow and angels casual and cozy energy before. It’s very dimly lit but when you order a cocktail—which are not cheap—they come over on a cart with a bright light so you can see what the waitresses—who are wearing flapper dresses and purses—are doing. Everyone in the bar stopped and stared. It was awkward for someone who just wanted a quiet drink. There is also no food in the bar aside from caviar. We opted to go outside. Like the previous commenter wrote, it was nice to be able to come to dinner at syr and grab a cocktail and walk through the gardens. Also, not sure if it’s a place to pop in for a drink either.
“I was not amused when a woman asked if Adam and I are brothers. (Memo to straight people: resist the urge.)” Memo to white people: resist the urge to assume two non-white people standing together are married. I cannot tell you how many times people assumed my brother and I were a married couple (ewwww).
Luke, I agree that you owe no explanation and I feel that Sophie's post is a little out of line, but well said!!
SYR “speakeasy” at Plow and Angel seems a bit weird. It’s not really a location that you pop into for a drink-more a destination for the evening and then it seems easier to get a drink at your table. What we do like to do is get a drink before dinner and wander the garden (we usually go once during the summer). Sorry that plow and Angel, for a more casual meal in the winter, is no longer available.
Santa Barbara Ketamine Therapy. :-)
Well said Luke!
I couldn’t agree more!
I have a bit to add to the memory of Redwood Inn. My dad was married to Bessie in 65,66, and my brother and I spent Thanks giving and fourth of July there. Bessie let us take m and m's and candy bars from the glass display and have as much milk as we wanted. Bessie made THE best homemade cheese cake , I can still remember the flavor and the warm cherries on top. My dad played piano in the restaurant and sang. My other two favorite memories was playing kickball on the street with a boy named Tony, a boy named Stevie, and I think there may have been a girl named Stormy. I had a crush on Tony and loved seeing Stevie dance and sing, "oh my baby does the hanky panky" they also introduced me to eating toasco sauce out of my hand. Bessie took me to a park near the restsurant and showed me the most beautiful tree that had a limb that came out a long ways and she told me she used to sleep there at night when she was a kid. I remember meeting her son Scott who traveled in a vw bus with his orange kitty. Years later I bought a vw bus cuz i thought her son had the right idea about life! The other thing about redwood inn is it was so beautiful insidecwith a red velvet lounge couch and the wooden staircase. Thanks for writing about redwood inn and Bessie!
Hi Sophie, I am the realtor for this listing and while perhaps it would be wise for me not to engage as I know nothing about you, I would suggest not casting aspersions on things you may not understand. The owner of this house is a wonderful person who has been collecting apparel and accessories for years and like anyone who has worked to amass an art, or car collection, has it on display for her gratification. Yes, the world is filled with many in need, and you have no clue what I or my client have done to help address this. I for one (though I see no reason to have to prove anything here), served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dream Foundation for close to 10 years, in addition to being involved in many other charitable causes. Additionally, my job is to sell high-end properties, and closets such as this are attractive to the target audience. That doesn't make me a bad person. I hope you have a good Thanksgiving, Luke Ebbin
Yeah think you should.
