New York–Style Pizzeria Opening on State Street

••• Chefs Miles Robbins and Kamil Jumale, who ran the Godmothers food truck when it launched, are behind Milio’s Pizza, serving New York–style pizza and soft-serve ice cream, at 801 State Street (at De La Guerra). They’re shooting for next month. UPDATE: Got some more info from Jumale…. “Milio’s will be a quick-service restaurant serving both whole pies and pizza by the slice, including our 18-inch round pizzas as well as our signature square pies and square slices. We’ll have 6–8 counter seats inside and approximately 24–30 seats on our outdoor patio, giving guests the option to dine in or take their food to go. We’re also hoping to begin serving beer and wine shortly after opening—we’re currently just waiting on our beer and wine license to be approved.”

••• Domecíl is hosting a pop-up this Saturday, July 25, with Noma Projects, “the pantry and fermentation company founded by the team behind the internationally acclaimed restaurant Noma. Guests are invited to explore a complete selection of Noma Projects products available for purchase while enjoying complimentary tastings in domecíl’s studio space throughout the day. Members of the Noma Projects team will be on hand to share the stories behind the products, explain their approach to flavor and fermentation, and offer insights into how these extraordinary ingredients can inspire everyday cooking.” It’s 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

••• Joplin’s in Ojai is closing July 26. It made it just over a year.

••• The Pressed Juicery outpost at Paseo Nuevo has closed. Thanks to P. for the tip and photo.

••• The Goleta outpost of Cajé Coffee Roasters, long in the works at 5340 Hollister Avenue (near S. Patterson Avenue), expects to open in August. —Restaurant Guy

••• The Ellwood‘s new outdoor event space, The Break, is a lawn overlooking the pier. Nashville Songwriter Nights are being held there August 22 and October 3.

••• Bombay Station 734, the new restaurant at 734 State Street from Apna‘s Ninder Josan and Kuldeep Singh, has opened for breakfast and lunch. I stopped by for a dosa and had a long chat with Josan. Given Apna’s proximity, they wanted to do something different, so instead of more northern Indian food, they’re focusing on the south. That means dosas, uttapams, a couple of curries, biryanis, egg dishes, and more. I quite enjoyed the ghee roast dosa, filled with spiced potatoes and served with sambar and a trio of chutneys. (The tomato chutney, in particular, is a standout.) If you’ve never had a dosa, go try one! It’s a crispy, tangy crepe of rice and lentil flour, which you can order with a filling or not. They’re satisfying without being heavy, and while they’re traditionally served at breakfast time in India, they make a terrific lunch. And they’re gluten-free. P.S. The bigger space, complete with terrace in back, means you can rent it as a party space, with food from either Bombay Station 734 or Apna.

So excited to try Bombay Station! Does anyone know if Milio’s will sell pizza by the slice?

I tried asking but have yet to hear back. I imagine it has to be doing slices, given the location on the State Street Promenade (i.e., not especially conducive to picking up whole pies or delivery).

Uncle Roccos and Rozzis have New York Style slices.

Unrelated, my garderners are now using electric leaf blowers. No more frantically closing windows to keep 2 stroke oil exhaust out of the house and dealing with the noise on calls and meetings. What a difference! I asked the worker today about it and he is much happier as well.
