Why Did the Rosewood Miramar Beach Add Gates?

What’s with the new gated entry at the Rosewood Miramar Beach? —C.

I asked hotel management whether the new gates—at the driveway and pedestrian entrance on S. Jameson Lane—are entirely decorative or intended to be used. The response: “The gates were a part of the original plans for the Resort and were just recently completed and installed. The Resort remains open and available to Resort guests and our local community to enjoy.”

That sidestepped the question, so I went over for a look. The pedestrian gate has a keypad on the outside and a push bar on the inside, features that would seem to indicate the gate could be locked at some point—perhaps late at night and/or during VIP events. Ditto for the new gatehouse, presumably to be staffed by a guard.

The Montecito Board of Architectural Review confirmed that the gates were on the original approved plans—but also that an easement requires the resort to allow public access to the coast. Here’s the language on the condition permit:

Public pedestrian access easements shall be maintained in three alignments across the Miramar site: 1) From the main entry at Jameson Lane through the site and down to the boardwalk and beach, 2) From the main entry at Jameson Lane through the site to the midpoint of the E/W portion of Miramar Ave, and 3) From the entry drive to the eastern parking lot through the site and down to the boardwalk and beach. The easement to the eastern parking lot shall be updated to reflect the changes due to the development in the northeast parking lot.

So locking the gates would be problematic, as there’s nothing in the easement language about limiting access during certain times. Even if the gates are locked, of course, the property is accessible from the east, by the train tracks.
