••• The October 12 Architectural Board of Review agenda includes a concept review of Friendship Manor‘s “four-story senior housing facility,” proposed for 701 N. Milpas (at the northwest corner of Ortega) and “comprised of 8 staff units with kitchens and 156 studio rooms for seniors with no kitchens.” The proposed design is rather institutional; here’s hoping the ABR doesn’t give the design a pass just because Friendship Manor is a nonprofit. The city will take the renderings offline after the meeting, so look quickly.
••• Giuseppe Salon & Barbershop has opened at 633 Chapala Street (Ortega/Cota).
••• According to the liquor-license application for the hotel under construction at 926 Hutash Street, in the crook of a southbound Highway 101 off-ramp, the property will be called Hotel Anna.
••• The inaugural Ojai Documentary Film Festival is October 26-30. Screenings include Musk, You Can See Everything, Nuisance Bear, Once Upon a Time in Harlem, and more.
••• An update about that mysterious statue at the Santa Barbara Zoo: “The Zoo statue is a part of their preparation for ZooLights—a November and December event with LED statues and animals,” commented Russ. “This year it has a new name and an orientation towards Hollywood.” Indeed, the zoo’s events calendar says ZooLights now called IllumaNature: “an immersive, glowing journey through California’s iconic landscapes.”
••• LOSSAN, the agency that oversees the rail corridor between San Diego and San Luis Obispo, held a Zoom meeting to discuss the location it’s now looking into for the Padaro Lane railway siding. The location is pictured in yellow below; note that the track would be on the highway side of the existing train track. Also, the tree study that LOSSAN commissioned about the previous location—further east, and on the beach side of the track—showed that around 700 trees would’ve been “affected.”
••• Press release: “The Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association is pleased to announce the return of the Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade on Friday, December 4, at 6:30 p.m., bringing one of the community’s most cherished traditions back to State Street for the first time since 2019. Established in 1934, the event will celebrate its 68th iteration this year.”
••• On March 5, Joan Osborne will be joined by Christian McBride at the Lobero Theatre for a celebration of the 30th anniversary of her album Relish, best known for “One of Us.” But I prefer this dirty little bop.

So happy LOSSAN moved the Padaro track project. The loss of that many trees would have been heavy on the heart.
