••• Here’s something we don’t see every day: according to the August 26 Historic Landmarks Commission, Eric and Wendy Schmidt would like to add a “950 square-foot observatory with attached control room” to their Solana estate on Eucalyptus Hill. The plan also calls for a tennis court and “viewing platform,” and it all requires the removal of 20 eucalyptus trees.
••• From Steven Gilbar: “Just wanted you to know that I have republished a revised edition of Literary Santa Barbara which Dean Stewart and I wrote back in the late 20th century and has since gone out of print. As it is the only chronological record of the many local writers and publishers (and it is doubtful there will ever be some future historian who will be foolish enough to write a new one) we thought it a service to the community to keep it in print, not only for someone interested in the subject but as a testament to those long-gone writers who labored in the inky vineyards. It is available at ‘better bookstores everywhere’ and, of course, Amazon.”
