It is one of my favorite weather vanes in town!
I’m curious what will happen to the Good Plow- their food is a great and I love their soft serve. So happy you included the fish market in your round up. We go there weekly from the Mesa- everything is delicious. The executive chef Paul created such a varied menu- everything we’ve had has been executed with such intention. Other items to try- shrimp tacos, swordfish meatballs in marinara, ahi poke bowl, and the mahi sandwhich.
From December: "A Restaurant Guy reader says he heard that something called Buddy’s, possibly serving barbecue, is opening in the W. Victoria space next to the Public Market. That runs counter to what was announced—that it would be an event space—when the building sold." https://www.sitelinesb.com/two-new-restaurant-spaces-proposed-in-the-funk-zone/
Where does the money come from to enable “affordable housing”? Why take an existing hotel that will bring in tax revenue, provide jobs, help support local businesses (teddy by the sea across the street slated to be developed and the new Institutional Ale next to Chubbies) ? Plenty of other locations to convert to affordable housing but this location should remain a commercial enterprise.
When did DMHA Architects lose the 700 Linden project?
Have to say I am happy to hear about the housing plan for the Quality Inn on De La Vina versus an Arrive Hotel... or for that matter another hotel addition on State Street. I think this year was a big wake up call to occupancy rates for hotels. Glad to see supply and demand doing its thing – now if there was a focus on the demand for affordable rentals and housing in the area, I'd think we'd all be a little happier.
Love the Chidlaw piece. The market is iconic!
I’ve been wondering why those looked so terrible. Sad. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
If you want to see a sad example of Canary Island palms with fusarium disease check out the group at Goat Tree, corner of State and Mason streets. I've been told it was introduced to the south coast by tree trimmers from the LA area when they didn't clean the chainsaws between jobs. Really unfortunate as there is no cure.
Very close to the Victoria Street entrance to the Public Market and across the street from Scarlett Begonia, there is a lot of construction. What will be going in this space?
Yes, Dad built that building, and Mom and Dad lived in the fourth floor apartment for 30 years. They loved their Beaver weathervane!

I’m just off to a good start! Pure dumb luck.
LOL! It would be an honor to be in the HOF!
I believe that was a Jerry Beaver property. https://www.independent.com/obits/2018/12/04/jerry-beaver/
Maybe do an interview with Karl? I'd love to know how he knows where all these obscure things are in SB!

Oh NO!!! Say it ain’t so!! Since the opening of the Metropolis I’ve been an avid patron, a promoter of “Thee sandwich shop” in town. I have taken so, so many people the Metropolis that they were stunned that the Metropolis was even there in the Funk Zone. Unfortunately now, I’ve retired out of town but the Metropolis is/was always my sandwich stop when in Santa Barbara. This is truly a sad day for my tastebuds! Why do great things/places have to come to an end? ???? Break-a-leg in your next endeavor. Peace, love, food!
Sorry- my mistake, wrong property
That is the front yard- all the way to Refugio rd. Please do attend the open house so you can update your fear mongering!
The house on Grand was extensively redone by This OId House back in about 2000. More can be found here: https://www.thisoldhouse.com/santa-barbara-house/21017445/the-santa-barbara-house
I want to change all of the finishes on Shepherd Mesa but wow, that view is to die for! Will be going to the open house. My concerns would be what might happen with the undeveloped ag land right below the property. If the state has its way it’s not an exaggeration to say that could end up an apartment building in the long term.
That house must be the home of the late Anthony Mozilo of Countrywide infamy. He filed suit against the Montecito Club and while changes were made the pickleball noise will be constant and if you've heard it essentially a deal breaker. Perhaps that is reflected in the price already. We will see...
Excellent reporting! This is a lot of work to collect. While there is always a lot of conjecture (food is fickle), this is a great baseline of what's what in the area. Nice one.
One of the most interesting ones in this series for me. Impressive what he has accomplished and his ongoing interest in the broader questions of humanity. Attempting to reckon with the dichotomous, sometimes demoralizing dynamics of resource contention and our sometimes-rational behavior in a hopeful way. When even a guy this smart can't figure out a solution, you know it's not easy... but respect the thoughtful meditation on the problem.
Tiffany! Hi, I would love to get your contact/ the shoe owner who owns the property. I am a photographer who would love to get access to shoot it.
