New Look for the Tri-County Produce Building

••• Coming to 1011 State Street (Figueroa/Carrillo): New Dimension Art Gallery, the latest in a series of local galleries showcasing one artist—in this case, Armen Hunanyan.

••• Galerie XX pulled the plug on its store at 1315 State Street, next door to the Arlington Theatre.

••• The design for the 99-unit, four-story mixed-use building at 335 S. Milpas Street—current site of Tri-County Produce, which “continue to operate and occupy the new commercial space”—got tweaked. The new look is below, and there’s more here. (I’m no architect, but I do think that the larger a building gets, the more it could use a focal point.) The project is on the Architectural Board of Review’s November 27 agenda.

••• Cat Power plays the Lobero Theatre on March 6 in support of a new album on which she recreates Bob Dylan’s famous 1966 “Royal Albert Hall Concert.”

••• “Have you seen any updates from the city about whether the new ‘flagship’ Electrify America vehicle-charging station is ever going to be approved?” asks S. It’s slated for 32 W. Carrillo Street (at Chapala). A company rep said, “At this time, the project is completing a design improvement to be followed by a final permitting review by local jurisdictions and is targeted to open next year.” The city confirmed it had not received anything from Electrify America since the last hearing in December 2022; the Project Design Approval granted at the time, pending some changes, is valid for three years.

••• From a reader: “There are rumors floating about that Glen Annie Golf Club is going to close or be sold. Could you please shed some light on this? We have a big fundraising event planned there and our board is wondering if we should seek a backup location.” If a deal is underway, no one involved is likely to talk about it—at least for attribution. Know something? Email [email protected] or text 917-209-6473. Anonymity guaranteed. UPDATE 11/28: “I am the local land use representative of the Glen Annie Golf Course,” emailed a planner at Flowers & Associates. “The reader’s inquiry about Glen Annie is likely related to the County of Santa Barbara’s Housing Element process. For background, the County is looking at numerous properties as part of a comprehensive planning effort, which is required by the state to create new housing. Glen Annie has been on the list as a potential site since early 2023. However, this is only a policy discussion at this time. Golf, fundraising events, and other operations remain ongoing. There is no plan to close or sell the property.”

••• And I was wondering about Casa de Maria, the Montecito retreat and conference center badly damaged in the debris flow. The website still says it was hoping to be open sometime next year, but that’s no longer the case. A rep for the organization says they’re still working on the site design.

This appears to me a step back from acknowledging and or embracing the grocer aspect of the design. I do think it is a trick to do but not impossible. Another concern is post construction the grocery will not return. Out of mind, out of habit.

The owner of Tri-County Produce is one of the developers of the new building.

Aware of the sale and future participation aspect, just this proposal does seem out of sync with the continued operation of the grocery so far

Another gallery? This town has enough space for “creative” pursuits not to mention the art walk. This location should be used for the public good, as a curio and souvenir shop.

Maybe you haven’t done your research or you’re just discriminating against gingers ? @small.time.citrus is the premier Ojai meme page and has been for the past 4 years.
