A Music Festival Is Coming to the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club

••• A women’s apparel shop called Caravan by KikiSol has opened at 631 State Street (Cota/Ortega).

••• Whitney Chic Boutique, also selling women’s apparel, has opened at 36 W. Calle Laureles. There’s a party on July 10.

••• Coast Tires & Service left 136 E. Haley Street (at Santa Barbara Street). Will that corner join the many other redevelopments in that part of town?

••• “The 10 or so Tesla chargers in the parking lot at the west end of the Rosewood Miramar Beach have died,” emailed E. “Could it be Tesla turned them off for sone some unknown purpose? Construction? Will they be moved? Was it an electrical blowout?” A hotel rep told me that it’s not responsible for the chargers, while E. reported back that her husband also contacted the hotel, and he was told that “they have called Tesla to report the problem because so many of their customers expect to be able charge their Teslas.”

••• Mācher‘s shop at Linden Square in Carpinteria opens July 4.

••• Press release: “Last week, we launched Radio Evolve, a new streaming radio station in Santa Barbara. Our idea is to play almost entirely indie music, along with various talk shows that we produce from our network of hosts. These shows tell inspiring stories, feature fascinating guests, and showcase new artists. We hope to be recognized for introducing a new wave of Santa Barbara bands and the SB sound to the world, as well as for showcasing a diverse blend of music submissions from around the globe, featuring artists who may not typically have the opportunity to have their music aired.”

••• Back me up typography nerds: the San Ysidro Road offramp sign looks like a mistake.

••• ZZ Top plays the Santa Barbara Bowl on November 4.

••• On October 4, the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club will be the site of the Palm Tree Music Festival, with John Mayer, Kygo, Sofi Tukker, and some other performers.

••• “I’ve seen your tree of the month feature and wonder if you would help me understand how to pronounce jacaranda.” emailed R. “Most Santa Barbara folks use a J sound, as in Jack. Yet the tree originates in Brazil, so shouldn’t it be pronounced with a Y sound, as in Yack? Maybe readers would like to weigh in?”

The capitals on SYR look to be a much larger point size than the standard Cal Trans proportional font set up.

I’m not sure about the point size but they force-justified it to meet the outside margin rather than centering to allow for more natural kerning. This is what happens when you let Microsoft Word make your design decisions.

I am simply thrilled this gains attention from others besides myself.

The Jacaranda tree is native of the southern hemisphere and grows in most southern South American countries, not only Brazil. Not sure how they would pronounce it in Brazil but for most Spanish speakers it is pronounced with a “Ha” sound like when you’re laughing. ha/ka/ran/dah.

For an audio sample, look up or listen to the song “what else can I do” from the movie Encanto.

Check into KEYT morning show, their reporters are who I turn to for the proper pronunciation on words native flair is “needed”…who decides which words are chosen? Ibiza? Qatar? Jacaranda? Salsipuedes?

I am disappointed that you never mentioned the Santa Barbara Lavender Festival. I sent the email with details that was required.

Lavender festival was very enjoyable. Great vendors, wonderful location. Look forward to attending again.

Brazilians pronounce a J as a soft G. It is not a Y sound. Think like Zsa zsa Gabor – zsa-caa-randa. The ca would be a hard K. You would not roll the r in randa.

Poor planning to book a music festival during the Avocado Festival.

Unfortunately the music festival at the polo fields is ridiculously overpriced. GA is $400 for just one day.

The non-capitalized letters are too short. The dot over the i and the d should line up with the top of the capitalized letters. Now my OCD will kick in every time I see that sign. Can it be fixed?

You are not alone! The weird San Ysidro Rd offramp sign is beyond jarring. Like fingernails on the blackboard for anybody who cares about typography.

Don’t throw stones… you misspelled some above – “Could it be Tesla turned them off for sone unknown purpose.”
