Palm seems to post most frequently on Facebook (dunno about Insta). Another site is Reddit r/santabarbara It's about the same not-quite-live timeframe as NextDoor, but has more of a "enjoy living your life in SB" and less "get off my lawn" vibe than ND.
Ha! Best comment I've ever read! Not just because it's hilarious, but also incredibly accurate. I forgot about Nextdoor, I thought it had held hands with LinkedIn and walked off into the sunset.
ST, you are freaking hilarious! Keep it coming!
For breaking news there is no other source than the Palm.
When a car flips, he's there. When a bike rides outside the lanes, he's there. When a bartender retires, he's there. When the Mission comes alive and the old men are dressed like boys, he's there. John covers it all and offers a locals' only flavor. He even pronounces Ree Phooff Eeeee Oooo correctly!
John Palminteri is a local gem and a member of a dying breed - the local newsman. Cherish him for when he's gone, there will be no other to replace him.
For last weeks news and gossip from the same 8 people go to EdHat, especially its comment section. For news that reads like a press release written by a PR intern, go to Noozhawk. For ad sponsored content and neo-liberal editorials, go to the Independent. For gossip, The Montecito Journal. For fires and weather related events, KEYT. For a dose of actual news, KCLU / KCRW do a decent job for SoCal related events. And if Nextdoor is on your phone or in your thoughts, bless your heart.
I agree. Also, it is easily available to listen to on your phone through many streaming services (I use tune-in) ; you only need the free version since, with public radio, you don't have to tolerate endless commercials (do donate to them if you value their invaluable service)
KCLU (102.3) is my source for local, breaking news. I listen when I drive and through the NPR website.
Thank you for this lovely article
yes I had noticed this too! Glad that you mentioned it; I was beginning to think I had imagined it.
I lived four blocks from a grade crossing. Quiet during the day, but the first night was a revelation. Every hour every night, a freight train would pass through blowing its horn (long long short long = Morse code for Q “here comes the queen”, a railroad tradition). It was ridiculous.
That's nice that Marisa will be closer to her dad Michael Haskell's longtime amazing Montecito antique emporium of native american and spanish colonial goodies in the Upper Village/SY Rd. Love these locals! Good luck with the move Marisa! xo
Priced to bring in customers but probably increase after a few months
Hayley it sounds like you’re ordering a pizza. Are you serious?? Do you know how difficult it is for restaurant owners to put everything on the line? And along come people like yourself asking for the moon and the sky. I have an idea… why don’t you invest your money and open up a place just like you want? Let’s see what happens
Good info Tina, thanks
While the hedge may benefit from a hard pruning, culturally there probably is another problem causing it to be infested by a disease. Is it the red leaf Eugenia hedge?
Those by default get psyllid And my 30 years of experience, they are more likely to get it if they are water stressed. Quite often plants are water stressed. You have to check what the irrigation is gardeners quite often. Do not check it.
Agriturf can spray
There’s also green worms, aphids, mealy bugs, and if there is a black sticky substance it is called sooty mold, and that is a result of insects, sucking sugar out of the plant and the sugar excreting on leaves, causing the mold. It is a secondary issue but not the actual disease.
Feel free to ask any questions
Ditto!
Unrelated, but the winery in Summerland is closing :( Any idea what might be going in next? I live in Summerland and am hoping it's another wine and/or beer spot - extra points the food is good and it's open past 5 pm. Would love to have another evening hangout on the main drag!!
A friend of mine lived right across the street in the last house on Chapala. She said at 6:45 every morning the loudspeaker at the train station would blare, "Arriving now, the Pacific Surfliner to Los Angeles!" And this went on all day with every train, then the freight trains blowing their horns in the middle of the night. That might cause people to move on to a more quiet abode.
So stoked on this piece! These benches always make me smile, and the story of how they’ve come to be is so wonderful. What a gift to Santa Barbara!

I thought the Cutler's menu was reasonably priced until noticing the $11 draft beer. If maintaining a supply of the draft beer is an issue, they could also offer bottles/cans. Am I the only one who prefers a bottle/can so I can pour it periodically to get a fresh aromatic head instead of sipping on what quickly becomes a stale glass of draught beer?
The West Beach condo has sold three times since 2019, and it's on the market again—so, yes, for whatever reason, no one seems to want to hold onto it for very long. And that makes it a hot potato.
For a seller not exactly doing a “flip,” but just trying to get out quickly with his or her pants still on, perhaps the more appropriate term is a “flap.” After all, according to the dictionary, a flap is movement of a wing or an arm from side to side. “By George, that guy just bought in a couple of months ago, now it’s listed again, and he did nothing to improve the place! He’s doing a flap!”
Excellent and entertaining review. I have had similar experiences at all four places. The mini portions at Bar Lou don’t hold up well to sharing with more than one friend, especially four !The food at RH I’ve had so far is dull, forgettable. Service was stellar. The acoustics at Lion Tale make it difficult to have a conversation but maybe the great ambiance makes up for that ? Clarkes was tasty. We also felt rushed, but maybe they will relax soon and let their customers also relax. ? Having a seafood centric restaurant in town is a nice option.
Lucky’s has no rivals, so far.
NoTown tavern in magnolia shopping center

I would love to see many more along the beach there.
Thank you for making and installing .
