I got a better idea—get a new Historic Landmark Commission, with Commissioners with generation legacy/knowledge of the City of Santa Barbara. Another Hotel!!! Just ridiculous
It is 100% clear, Hwy 246 to Hwy 101! My husband is a backcountry outdoorsman- he has a awesome hunting vehicle ( Suzuki Samurai ) that we took- the road was in great shape- yes there are spots you need to be cautious so you don’t mess up- but as a novice backcountry anything- my Lexus wagon could have handled it all just fine. It was a lovely drive- we passed 2 groups of walkers and a few hardcore mountain bikers racing towards SYV- I recommend a picnic on the Gaviota Coast side! Lots of poison oak!
That is bullshit they murdered him

You must know him personally to make an assumption like that. From the article he wanted to build apartments, "city council was threatening to force developers in the area to include more affordable housing" - i.e. reduce the value and potential income of what he was trying to build (housing units!). In the face of city councils threat, Knell changing concepts makes him a "petty little man"? So to not be "petty" he should have just built something that could have lost him and his investors money?
The city pissed him off so he decided to develop something that would be even more onerous to not only the city, but also most of the rest of the community (the ones who live in a commune here, at any rate). So, yes. Petty. Little. Man.
Petty little man? Must have missed that part of the article.
Brilliant idea. Save the Pressie.
yet it comes down to City approval?
I may have to eat my words (tee hee) about there being no fine dining in SB. A lot of your food features recently have looked awfully tasty.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been up that way. Are you able to get all the way through to SYV now on Refugio now, Christine!? Thanks in advance.
Ultimately, Knell seems not only like a typical developer, but also a petty little man. Jerk…
Agreed. It would be much better if the SB News Press building turned into affordable housing.
Very good points and in agreement with you.
It always sucks to lose a local favorite spot.. but I’m mostly concerned that affordable housing requirements led to zero housing and a hotel instead. Well intentioned policy backfiring
I too had a wonderful experience this Thanksgiving. We were a table of 4 and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and even had a birthday desert surprise brought to our table, after discussing one of us had an upcoming b.d. while our server was at the table. Surroundings impeccable, food delicious, and all of us very thankful to be able to have this lovely restaurant available to us.
The food and prices belie the beautiful setting. The cioppino was the most mediocre and expensive example of the dish I’ve ever had. Lukewarm too. Service wasn’t bad, a bit slow, but I recognized several servers who worked elsewhere in our fair town. No raves either from others in our party. Get the burger while they sort things out.
SBNP has been demolished, for years
Closing State Street to automobiles is a good start but I want to feel safe when walking, dinning or shopping on State Street - it’s that simple. I don’t want to be dogging reckless bicyclist or experience angry people standing on street corners. State Street is about enjoying our town and of course commerce. Make it safe!
Is there any way we can find out where this sign is and if it's going back up? This sign is a gem and should be preserved, even if it's installed somewhere else.
I've got an even better solution. Buy the SB News Press building and turn THAT into a hotel. I hope the Press Room can be preserved. But I guess if you're not a local and a fan of that beloved bar, then you have no problem bringing in the demo equipment.
I’m writing this as I don’t even understand the other reviews on SYR. Our San Ysidro Ranch Thanksgiving dining experience was perfection. I ordered vegetarian which was wonderfully creative and delicious. The staff, like always made us feel at home. The service was absolutely impeccable.
I’ve got an easy solution - just demolish Santa Barbara News Press.
Mācher in Goleta, on Calle Real between Fairview and Patterson, is super cute. Easy and free parking, lunch at Nikka Ramen, groceries at TJs... even if you can't find a great gift, the atmosphere is a gift in itself for the shopper!
