The article seems to be a caltrans release dated 9/3... and it says full closure starting 9/16?
The closure of 192 changed. The engineers' original recommendation was to close that large of a section, but Caltrans quickly realized that wasn't a viable option. The closure is much smaller now. A short stretch of road from Orizaba to Parma Park will be closed for about five weeks starting September 16. Caltrans can confirm.
Happy to see the original building and business operation preserved. By this point it is a historic landmark. We won't mention the SP Roundhouse across the street that was thoughtlessly demolished. If it were still extant it would attract a constant throng of tourists. Talk about a toy train museum...
Greetings, I was on the south side of Santa Rosa Island, at Johnsons Lee, on 9/5-9/7. A very dry hot wind blew in every evening dying out at about 2:00AM. The first day it started at 8:00 and then each day got earlier. On 9/7 the hot wind started at 2:00 PM. 9/6 was the hottest, with the temp over 95. Was this all Sundownders coming from Gaviota? Just trying to understand the weather. Thanks, Julius
You deduct total expenses from total income to get your profit. You pay taxes on your profit. Just like every other business. This isn't the gotcha you think it is.
Hi Paul, there are these things called capital improvements, like replacing your roof or resurfacing your driveway. They're not capped at cpi or a 2% increase each year. You'll understand in a decade when you need to reroof and it costs 10% (or more) of what you originally paid for the house.
OK, I read it. Who are these folks? I wonder if they own property themselves? Here's what can happen, instead of dealing with all the hassels from entitled renters , unexpected repairs and rising costs I can just cash out my investment and remove my single family home from the rental market or turn my multifamily into condos. End of problem for me but fewer units available for renters.
Right on Sam T! Totally agree with your comments regarding dressing up for dinner. Had lunch at the Stonehouse last Fall. We were dressed for a birthday celebration and sat among people in workout wear. No desire to return.
Buy a house already!
All of you are forgetting that as a landlord you can deduct ALL your expenses from your profits/rental income. That can amount to a huge savings as compared to other investment income. I do believe there is tremendous greed going on in the rental market and truly, it makes me sick.
This is exactly what the Country Mart needs! It’s really important that hotel guests and “weekend housers” that are so important to our economy get the dining experience they are accustomed to in their more refined cities. Locals, by definition, have their own kitchens and should cook at home!
$36 for chicken enchiladas? nope
Sam, exactly what I saw and experienced at Toma a couple weeks ago for my birthday dinner with my husband. Come on, people, read the room. If you see white tablecloths and waiters in white long sleeve shirts (busboys too), then tees, shorts, flip flops, phones, and toddlers are not appropriate.
Witches’ stairs! I’ve never seen those before and the kid in me loves them.
Plenty of other restaurants out there. They all alow flip flops, so you are covered.
Bueno Onda on Milpas. Empanadas from heaven!

My first ever comment here- totally disagree with Caruso write up. Besides my belief that SY Ranch is a considerably better food and service experience than Carusos in every regard, the faux everything about Miramar (including Carusos) is apparent at every turn. Wearing a sport coat to give appearance of “fine dining” is so spot on with all of Miramar- give everything an “appearance” but ignore the substance. We moved to SB to get away from having to give any appearances. Plus- the hotel guests are 80% people coming up from LA for a weekend - so that’s another reason to avoid :)
About Alma Fonda Fina, I will quote Bugs Bunny: "Did you see those prices?" I don't know, maybe it's fair, given that Montecito is somewhat of a cartoon already --
Expecting a SY Kitchen-related place to appear soon in the Via Vie space
Your exact quote: "We have owned our home for 4 years and our monthly costs have not changed so why would that be any different for someone renting their property?" In other words you have changed your story. Most landlords are paying PITI plus utilities. Then there's maintenance. And the costs related to renter abuse/neglect. Did you mention taxes and the cost of doing business in California? Among other things, I don't owe you a shred of proof that my insurance premium just increased 40%. I won't defend the malfeasance of unethical landlords but you have conveniently lumped everything into one bucket without any understanding of what it costs to operate a business, especially in California--and somehow managed to make it about politics.
Evening with Malcolm Gladwell is hosted by Kara Swisher, which makes me doubly excited. Thanks for sharing the County petition. Maybe there’s more to the story but this code sounds misguided or outdated. Exactly what I was talking about in my last post about finding red tape we can eliminate to help business without compromising on environment. And I know a lot of other things the County can be doing with their supposedly limited resources…
I couldn’t agree more. That space has natural beauty and requires restraint—no adornment needed. It was perfect before—like a little European hideaway right in our midst. They’ve overdressed it with tacky clothes and too much drugstore makeup. What a pity… Also, has anyone noticed that the service is very poor at the Stonehouse?
I would love to see everyone's housing bills that show their costs have skyrocketed that would result in landlords having to increase rent every year to folks who have stayed in that same apartment/house. On top of the fact that we know they aren't charging rent based on a zero net profit so there was already a cushion built in when they rented it. If you work with anyone who rents, you've probably heard plenty of horror stories of folks having to find a new apartment because the landlords are increasing rent without making any marked improvements to their rentals. Yes, it is greed whether you like that word or not, it's the truth. Again I've owned my home for 4 years and the largest increase has been our HOA fees, all other costs are very slight increases that would warrant a 2% increase on rent at most but I have a feeling those increases are not breaking the bank for the vast majority of landlords who are probably using the specter of "inflation" or "rising costs" or as some of the disgusting comments here have mentioned "illegal immigrants" to raise rents on tenants. The MAGAism of all this is really sick.
