Inside the New Family-Friendly Pool Hall on Chapala Street

••• The Rack, the new billiards hall in the former Don Q space at 1128 Chapala (Figueroa/Anacapa) has opened, and it’s a fun addition to downtown, with nine tables rentable by the hour, tournaments, lessons, and leagues. (A beer license is in the works.) And it’s family-friendly. I grew up with a pool table in the house, and the game has obvious benefits regarding hand-eye coordination, patience, geometry, and more. While I’m no expert, every now and then I have managed to run the table—a feat sure to impress. Plus, any activity that stops kids, or any of us, from staring at a screen is a winner. P.S. The stools in the doorway are to deter the robot vacuum from making a run for it.

••• The DJ Javier show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara in Paseo Nuevo is without a doubt among the most vibrant art exhibits you’ll ever see. My favorite part is the room of T-shirts he has created (that’s only one section pictured below); he has a fantastic eye for graphic design.

••• Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brad Hall, and Jane Lynch will be at the Lobero Theatre on November 20 for a conversation moderated by producer Dante Di Loreto (“Glee,” “Fellow Travelers,” “American Horror Story”): “This talented group of Santa Barbara residents have collectively won 18 Emmys, 11 SAG awards, and 2 Golden Globes, in addition to numerous other nominations and accolades. They’ll share stories about their life in the arts, the unexpected twists in their careers, and the importance of creating community along the way.” Below: Lots of bad language and adult themes.

••• Follow-up info regarding the recent news that The Well bought a 9.13-acre property in Carpinteria for a “creative hub + expansive warehouse + immersive retail experience”: the company is consolidating a bit, moving its Big Daddy’s outpost from Culver City and closing its Coast Village Road store (below) on December 15. The locations in the Upper Village and Summerland will remain open.

••• The structures at 1528 State Street (Micheltorena/Arrellaga) are proposed for demolition, according to the Historic Landmarks Commission’s October 22 agenda, to be replaced by “a new four-story mixed-use building comprised of a 440-square-foot commercial space at the ground level, and three residential units. Parking would be consolidated into a nine-space parking structure accessed from State Street.” Rendering courtesy Cearnal Collective.

••• Santa Ynez General has moved all apparel, for women and men, to a new location in Los Olivos (2948 Nojoqui Avenue). Everything else can be found in the original Santa Ynez shop.

••• “I noticed these old-looking horseshoes embedded in the asphalt of Arlington Plaza,” emailed S. “They sort of make a path. Do you know anything about them or why they’re there?” A rep for the shopping center had this to say: “The landlord is a big horse lover and love equestrian-inspired things. He thought it was a nice nod to that and also the historic, Spanish hacienda–styling of the Arlington Plaza building.” Apparently, they’ve been there for around 10 years.

The corner of Patterson & Hollister is receiving lots of landscaping. What is coming to that location?
