A Meat-and-Seafood Market Is Opening in Carpinteria

••• The grand opening of the Goleta location of Drover’s Doughnuts—at 5745 Calle Real, most recently a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf—is January 17. The company also has shops in Buellton and Solvang.

••• Exciting news in Carpinteria: Peter and Caroline Hernandez are opening Coyote’s Market in the former Carp Kitchen space on Carpinteria Avenue. Look for it this spring. From Caroline:

We’re lucky enough to be partnering with Motley Crew for all of our meat and seafood sourcing. We’re sourcing as much of the meat and seafood from the Central Coast as possible, and the majority from California. We’ll also be carrying pantry staples and kitchenwares, also sourced as locally as possible, with all of those items from California. On top of that, we’ll also carry a selection of kitchen knives. As we want to make sure we’re offering the community the finest knives available, those will be sourced from both local makers and renowned knife makers from Japan, Germany, and the greater U.S.

Peter and I have had this concept in mind for years, as we’ve been constantly disappointed with our options for sourcing sustainable, humane, and local meat/seafood in the greater Santa Barbara area. There have been a ton of new businesses opening here in Carp (yay!) and we’re excited to join their ranks as one that is owned and operated by Carpinteria residents. Both Peter and I were born and raised in Santa Barbara, and are really thrilled to be able to open a business less than a 10-minute drive from our home in Carpinteria.

••• Thanks to Derek for the tip that Santa Barbara Food Connection (Milpas/Canon Perdido) has closed. The food trucks are still operational, as is its sibling restaurant, Downtown Eats, inside M. Special’s State Street taproom.

••• Anchor Rose at the harbor has closed, and Restaurant Guy says “the next tenant […] might be the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company,” which would be spectacularly depressing. UPDATE: Applications for the RFP process are due at 3 p.m. today, so nothing has been decided yet. The upstairs and downstairs spaces are being offered separately. UPDATE: And without getting into the details of I know this, it’s unlikely that Bubba Gump will be moving into the Anchor Rose space.

••• It looks like Jonesy’s Fried Chicken isn’t taking over the former Derf’s after all. The space is for lease, and according to the listing agent, “remodeling/constructing [is] projected to begin in a month or two.”

••• “Santa Playa Mariscos is officially closed, their sign is gone, and Yona Redz now occupies the entire space [at 1230 State Street] exclusively.” —Restaurant Guy

••• An update on Frinj Coffee, back from bankruptcy. —Independent

••• The corner space at 801 State Street (at De La Guerra) is being built out as a small restaurant—you can see the counter if you peek in. There’s no tenant yet. Care to dream about what might end up there?

Bubba Gump Shrimp at the harbor? Dense housing mandates? View blocking multi story condos for 2nd homes? Automobile parking in bike lanes? Does this city have a master plan? Does it look like high density Monaco where rents are unbearably high?

Interesting- Zookers in Carp is doing a fantastic job with their meat market. Best sandwiches in the area as well.

Be nice if Siteline did some sleuthing on whether Rudy’s in Carp is going to re-open after the fire.

Recently ate at Buellton Rudy’s. The blandness, the chipped plate, the wobbly tables with worn out booths- at least when the gal told us “cash only” she was smiling. One out of two plates wrong items. Used to love Montecito Street Rudy’s….

We frequent Rudy’s on Upper State. Consistently great food and wonderful staff. Have never paid in cash there.

I’m glad to hear it! Had given up on Buellton years ago, but my guest requested it, so of course we went! California Tacos across the street has more options but more $$$.

Agree 100%. Zooker’s Meat and Seafood is great with custom orders and everything else. I have never once asked for something they couldn’t get me, and fast. Sounds like the new place will focus on kitchenware/gifts as as well as meat, with differentiates it, and hopefully Zooker’s will stay fish/meat focused.

If Bubba Gump is thinking about opening there, it’s clear they haven’t done any market research. I can’t imagine it would last long if they actually opened. At least I hope not.

Your promoting donuts and fried chicken! Wow….. Bubba’s is awesome. Liberal tunnel vision is bizarre. Go Trump, Go!

“You’re” is the contraction for “you are”. “Your” is a modifier before a noun.

You’re a MAGA ignoramus.

Your eighth grade report card average must have been C-.

See?

A frozen to fried chain restaurant in the harbor would be excruciatingly devastating to the locals and inevitably result in another empty space while the vetting process starts all over again.

Gotta love that MAGAs rejoice over the death of small business and instead revel in being corporate bootlickers. What ever could go wrong hahaha
What a “pick me” comment from Mark, who clearly could use a grammar lesson

I suspect a necessary upgrade of the Derfs space will be cost prohibitive. Should have let it be.

So excited about Coyotes Market in Carp. Any chance you could also be a cheese monger? That seems to be the only thing missing in our wonderful town! Best of luck and see you in the spring!

I remember when the owner of Piranha had a restaurant at 801 State, I think it was called Rock’s. It was a great spot to have a drink and meal and people watch. This is a great spot on State that would attract a simple breakfast with good coffee, lunch and dinner. Don’t think it’s a great late night spot.

Drover’s Doughnuts is a nice addition to the Calle Real Shopping Center. Nice Barista Bar, Breakfast Sandwiches, and yes, delicious doughnuts. Thanks J.D. and the friendly lunchtime staff.
