On November 3, 2024, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m., the highly anticipated Michael Towbes Library Plaza will officially open with a lively community festival—Plaza Palooza! The day will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and feature performances from beloved local groups like the Santa Barbara Symphony, Flamenco Santa Barbara, and more.
Anapamu Street will transform into a vibrant pedestrian plaza with over 50 nonprofits offering activities for all ages. Families can explore interactive booths, enjoy food trucks, take part in face painting, and browse the Friends of the Library Book Sale. With so much to experience, this is a day you won’t want to miss!
“The opening of the Michael Towbes Library Plaza marks a new era for Santa Barbara Public Library,” said Kristina Hernandez, Library Services Manager.
The new Michael Towbes Library Plaza has a rich history rooted in Santa Barbara’s commitment to literacy and community. The project was made possible by a $5 million community-driven campaign and a $1 million Endowment to ensure the Plaza will be a sustainable, dynamic gathering place for generations to come. The 10,000-square-foot venue is an extension of the Library and broke ground in 2022, designed to host diverse and free activities that bring the community together.
Library Foundation Executive Director, Lauren Trujillo shared, “Unlike traditional open spaces, this Plaza allows the Library to bring its free educational and cultural resources outdoors, creating an accessible space for everyone. Libraries have always been vital community hubs, and the new Michael Towbes Library Plaza will enhance that role by offering expanded programming, including storytimes, book fairs, local author events, and even career and volunteer fairs.”
The new Michael Towbes Library Plaza is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to building and uplifting Santa Barbara. Michael Towbes, Chairman of the Board of The Towbes Group, Inc. and Montecito Bank & Trust, co-founder with Gail Towbes of the Towbes Foundation, and beloved local philanthropist had a passion for giving back. His legacy of giving, from affordable housing to arts and education, has shaped Santa Barbara. Now, with the opening of the Michael Towbes Library Plaza, his passion for giving back will continue to inspire future generations.
Come celebrate this exciting new space that will continue to inspire lifelong learning, civic engagement, and creativity in our community!
