Around a Third of Santa Rosa Island Has Burned

••• The fire on Santa Rosa Island has “burned 17,554 acres and was 44% contained as of Wednesday night. […] The U.S. Coast Guard initially said the fire appeared to be caused by a man who crashed his sailboat at the island and fired signal flares. The agency and fire incident officials later issued a correction to statements citing the flares as the cause, and now say the cause is still under investigation.” —Noozhawk

••• The Independent made its endorsements for the June 2 primary election. Carbajal, Hart, and Capps are all a lock; do consider voting for Kyle Slattery and Melinda Greene for two roles that badly need fresh air. (Can we agree that someone being “a standout baseball player at San Marcos High School” is wildly irrelevant to elected office?) And if you want more housing built in the city of Santa Barbara, Measure A deserves a good look.

••• “The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors announced on Wednesday that it has selected Jana Petersen of Boulder County, Colorado as its next county executive officer. […] She currently serves as the county administrator for Boulder County, Colorado, a role she began in January 2020.” —Noozhawk

••• From a press release on Edhat: “The City of Goleta’s Design Review Board will be conducting a Preliminary Design level review […] for a proposed new church and other design aspects affecting both church facilities (i.e. lighting, landscaping) on May 26 at 3 p.m. The property owner, Christ Lutheran Church, has submitted a proposal to split the property located at 6595 Covington Way into two lots to allow the construction of a new church and associated improvements for Anthem Church. […] Development on proposed Lot 2 will include the construction of a 6,512 square-foot sanctuary/community assembly building and a two-story 13,554 square-foot education building to support daycare and preschool uses.”

••• “Governor Gavin Newsom announced he’s set aside $11 million for the creation of a 30-unit ‘tiny home’ village for homeless families on the County of Santa Barbara’s sprawling Calle Real campus. […] The project is expected to break ground late this summer. The units will be ready for occupancy next fall. When it opens, the project will be named after the Balay Kop Foundation.” —Independent
