Sorrell Design Is Closing Up Shop After 41 Years

••• Sorrell Design is closing up shop after 41 years.

••• The Miniso store at 733 State Street has closed. I went inside once, because it looked like a fun source for stocking stuffers, but the intense Christian preaching booming over the speakers was a turnoff.

••• I was sorry to see the “for lease” sign on Giannetti Home‘s very pretty space at 1309 State Street (Sola/Victoria). The firm said it has no plans to reopen elsewhere in Santa Barbara, and that it will “be doing online sales for the time being.”

••• Dumb move of the week: “On July 21, 2020 at 6:50 a.m. Santa Barbara Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit responded to a parking lot in the 1400 Block of San Andres Street on a report of a man with a gun,” announced the SBPD in a release. “The witness reported a male subject sleeping inside of a white Nissan Altima with a gun in his hand. Officers arrived and conducted a high-risk contact. The sole occupant, 23-year-old Brandon Topete of Goleta, was detained without incident. Topete has previously affiliated with a criminal street gang in Goleta. A search of the vehicle was performed. During this search, officers located a loaded semi-automatic .22 caliber Sig Sauer firearm. The magazine contained ten rounds. A significant amount of additional evidence was located and linked to possible other crimes.”

••• From the Santa Barbara Historical Museum: “We are very pleased to announce we will to reopen as an Outdoor Museum with the installation of Project Fiesta: The History of Old Spanish Days in our charming courtyard. We hope you enjoy this fresh air take on our annual tribute to our favorite festival. The exhibition opens this Saturday.”

I’m sorry to see yet another business close. I have long thought 1309 State would make a killer apartment, though.
