What are the changes for boat slip owners? I am in Marina #3. Paid $19K for a 28’ slip permit in 2016. Now they are “selling” for $65K - $80K. How would the proposed changes affect my ability to sell it?
Yep, that puts it on my permanent "No Fly" list. Oh, how I love parts of the world where everything-- food, tax, tip, service, is included in the bill. It's bad enough that we have to deal with the out of control tipping scene here in the U.S., but it's just insanity when a business starts adding on other non-included charges as well.
Price transparently!
Nailed it! And let's not forget that 5% cost of living charge they stuff into the bill.
We looked at the property and it needs a lot of work. There was mold and water leaks, no beach access and all kinds of issues making it a problem property for someone budget minded. Great views however and a beautiful neighborhood. Do some homework and you will find the original house built on the site and the modern upgrades are now all very dated. A 10 million dollar fixer for sure.
Max, You are correct. Santa Barbara is on track to become a trifecta of second homes (via new build apartments). AirBnBs and Section 8 housing.
Slip owners do pay property tax, there is a possessory interest tax of 1% of the assessed value of the slip that is based on your right to occupy the slip, which is separate from the slip rental fee. There was a 2016 grand jury report that discusses it in detail!
True!
To describe where it is, out in Goleta...then explain the whole 7 mile long strip...or not.
Boat owners don’t own the slips, they have permits to use the slips which are public land. They pay permit fees, not property tax
This is a great change. It’s absurd to have a black market for privately selling the use of public land
I would like to see all the taxes they collect and what they pay out and to who, its basic mathematics every person should know what they can and cannot afford, it just baffles me how a city cannot run off its budget.
Is the city banning boat owners from owning the slips? No more cash transactions, then no more property taxes collected if they are worthless
You can't say that because the Santa Barbara Airport actually is in the City of Santa Barbara - there's a 7-mile long strip of City land primarily under the Pacific Ocean that connects the City to the airport.
We rented 1102 Del Mar when it was an Airbnb a couple years ago. It felt small and needs a lot of work!
Perhaps we could use more clarity on the budget shortfall? Maybe some qualified accountants could offer a bit of “pro bono” work to help the public understand it in simple terms? Always a lot of assumptions and opinions but never any detail. Point us to where we can get and understand details.
Where is the airport? The Santa Barbara Airport is in Goteta. No!!!!! You cant say that!
If you own a business on CVR you are going to say Montecito unless you want to confuse customers as to where you are located. Marketing 101.
Its surrounded by Montecito though. Montecito is a much better descriptor and creates less confusion.
PS. Coast Village Road is not Montecito. That’s well known but unimportant. MONTECITO has 3 fine dinner options: Pane Y Vino, Firehouse Grill and Futniture Store, and newby … Little Mountain.
Wasteful spending to change the NAME of post office!?!? Place names are handy. Giving a facility a person name is silly, impractical AND COSTLY! Stop this unnecessary expense.
Food should not be swimming in butter, period. But I want them to succeed.
Concerning the budget shortfalls- funny the County just can’t see the connection between Sable operating & tax revenue flowing in. The CCC saw the glowing light with Diablo.
Concerning the county’s projected financial shortfall: I just couldn’t help but be reminded of the 48% pay increases the Supervisors just granted themselves in May. This news coming just seven months later creates-at best-very poor optics.
Christine, you are lost in the sauce… whatever confirms your bias or floats your boat. Just because everybody else is doing it makes it cool, right? Also, how about a little less harm to the planet?… and I love the tit for tat with the almonds, lol. You seem so proud to be of the norm. Bravo.
I graduated from Brooks Institute in 1965, married a lovely native of Montecito and adopted Santa Barbara as my home, not where I was born, but where I matured, married, had a child born at Cottage Hospital and returned after the Army to work for Rex Fleming Prods. I fell in love with the architecture; I lived in a 1925 pure English Normandy home on the Riveria. Santa Barbara was my Paradise but I had to leave to follow a career path. By the time I was established back in the Midwest, I could not afford to return to Santa Barbara to live..... now I hear and read about developers who are hell bent on destroying the heritage of a small, seaside community which had the allure competing with the best of Europe....Will Santa Barbara become another Ventura? Where are the preservationists , the moguls who live there but without any protest to the destruction of one of the most beautiful cities in the world?
I love Little Mountain and have been three times. The rice is $12 not $17 and it's swimming in butter not oil and everyone whose shared it with me (4 people) loved it. The pork with apples is terrific...the cheesecake is amazing - and i love the staff.
Le Petit Valentien -- maybe not classic French, but pretty close and great prices and great chef Robert. (and Ethiopian on the weekends!)
The property has building violations on, and the property was held by a bank that wanted out after foreclosing on the previous owner.
