Church Has Plans for a Big Roof Deck Downtown

••• Yesterday’s Historic Landmarks Commission agenda had two items worth noting. First up: OceanHills Convenant Church—currently holding Sunday services at Santa Barbara Junior High—apparently has plans for a permanent home at 1002 Anacapa Street (at Carrillo), where it’s proposingan 8,468-square-foot interior and exterior renovation […] consisting of a 1,582-net-square-foot second story addition and a 3,579-net-square-foot roof deck, as well as a new corner entry tower, new trash enclosure, transformer, short term bicycle parking and new electric vehicle parking.”

••• Second: The 36-unit apartment building proposed for 932 De La Vina (at Carrillo) got a new look. It’s an improvement over the original design.

••• And a pair of long-in-the-works projects were on the HLC’s consent agenda: the Electrify America electric-vehicle charging station at 32 W. Carrillo Street (at Chapala) and the State Street 101 undercrossing below Highway 101 between Gutierrez and Yanonali, which is getting a Jeff Shelton upgrade. The columns will now be straight instead of curved. (Update: I replaced the previous rendering with the column design that got approved. And another update: Dominique asked when the State Street project will start, and the contact at Public Works had this to say: “The project will be rebid, construction is anticipated in late spring/summer.”)

••• Speaking of Shelton, I always get a kick out of his writing—he pulls no punches. Enjoy his recent write-up about the construction of this house on Arbolado Road on the Riviera.

••• The latest update regarding Highway 101 construction says that the soonest the Olive Mill ramps will close is the night of January 8. (Update: A subsequent email says the ramps will Bothe be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on January 4 and 5.)

••• And the Gaviota rest areas on Highway 101 will reopen by 5 p.m. today.

••• The former Rite Aid building on State Street (De La Guerra/Canon Perdido) has a new tenant: a women’s apparel store called Creations.

••• Press release: The Santa Maria/Santa Barbara County Continuum of Care, the County of Santa Barbara and The Santa Barbara Alliance for Community Transformation “invite volunteers to participate in the countywide 2023 Homeless Point-In-Time Count from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The Point-In-Time Count is the annual count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness on a given day.”

••• A public notice from the city’s Architectural Board of Review says that on January 9 the board will discuss a “proposal to merge two lots and construct new automated drive-thru carwash” at 110 and 150 S. La Cumbre. (The notice says “N. La Cumbre,” but that was a mistake.)

••• Up now at My Pet Ram: Golden Hour, “new work by Stephanie Guerrero, Cary Hulbert, and Margaret Thompson. The exhibition showcases mysterious landscape paintings with seemingly natural forms cast in uncanny yet captivating light.” Below: Thompson’s “Neverland.”

Love the Jeff Shelton piece about the house on the Riviera. We have a small Shelton designed house that we were lucky enough to purchase 12 years ago and I just redid the kitchen floor using Jeff designed tile. Such a Santa Barbara treasure.

Any word on start date if State Street underpass construction? First it was late summer then fall. I wrote Jeff on instagram and he had no clue and said it’s a public works project so only they know. Any chance we can get a update on the start time frame ?

Are they going to add a well stocked bar, a la Mount Caramel? Because everyone really needs a luxurious roof deck to fully appreciate JC. All that and no taxes paid on their income; must be nice. We’re in the wrong business!

It’s nice to see a party finally planning to utilize a rooftop deck. I don’t understand why this town doesn’t have any rooftop dining like Santa Fe or La Jolla. Santa Barbara is the perfect place for them with our mountains on one side and the ocean on the other.
