Brass Bear Uptown Has Opened

••• The landlord of South Coast Deli‘s Chapala location (at Micheltorena) has decided not to renew the lease, and the restaurant has closed. The Independent says a new tenant is expected next month.

••• Pietro Bernardi, owner of Pane e Vino and Via Vai, told P. that neither restaurant is closing, despite the rumors.

••• While Restaurant Guy reports that Brass Bear Uptown (right), in the former Cafe Stella space off Las Positas, has soft-opened. Owner Seth Anderson says, “We have had some soft opening days but are still getting everything dialed in before we are open open.” UPDATE 1/27: Noozhawk says it has indeed opened, with a profile of the owners.

••• According to Little Heart Cafecito, the Santa Barbara Public Market will be closed from Monday, January 30, to Sunday, February 5.

••• 805 Living profiled the relatively new Calabasas outpost of Crossroads Kitchen, a vegan fine-dining restaurant with branches in L.A. and Las Vegas.

••• Speaking of Calabasas, I’m always seeking recommendations for restaurants between here and LAX. I’ve enjoyed Moody Rooster in Westlake Village, and I really liked the Sherman Oaks outpost of Petit Trois, but it’s a bit out of the way. Friends have suggested Two Doughs in Agoura Hills and Lovi’s Deli in Calabasas. Any others we should all bear in mind? (P.S. I’d also love to know if there’s any really good coffee near the 101.)

••• Could change be coming to Trattoria Vittoria? A friend sends word that it may be under new management. The restaurant’s website isn’t working, but that’s apparently unrelated.

••• I was noodling around Google Maps, thinking about a walk somewhere new, when I saw the European Deli & Market, which I had never heard of. It’s on Hollister Avenue, just west of Modoc (and there’s parking behind the building but the entrance to the one-way driveway is on the west side of the building). As someone who gets extremely excited about new food, I was in heaven. The store has the kind of stuff you only see in markets in Europe and the Middle East. Because I’m not allowed to buy more food right now (we’re trying to empty our pantry in advance of a move), I only bought one thing—halloumi, which is hard to find around here unless you’re OK with it being covered in dried herbs. Once we’re settled in, I’ll be back for the pickles (including the turnips and cherry tomatoes), for sure, and sauerkraut, and pierogis, and who knows what else…. Well, not the canned meat.

For decent coffee near the 101, there is 10 Speed right off Valley Circle which is decent enough. It’s usually my stop between LA and home. And if you’re SB-bound you can stop by French and pick up some imported butter from Le Beurre Bordier, which is worth seeking out. Another good coffee spot right off the 101 that’s closer to home but really excellent: Prospect Coffee Roasters in Ventura.

Tramonto Bistro. Right on PCH in Malibu on the way back to Santa Barbara from LAX. They never fail to take the edge off traveling back.

European Deli has been around for quite some time. Been going there because it’s the only place to get eastern european basics. Wishing them all the best and hope they stick around.

Nonna, 951 South Westlake Blvd., Westlake Village, is excellent; just past Townsgate Road where Brent’s is located. Easy-on/easy-off the 101 — a perfect dinner place for meeting friends from LA

Adding two more of our favorites when on the road!

Namaste Spiceland in Thousand Oaks: Indian grocery store with amazing vegetarian cafe and a huge selection of sweets. We love to grab takeout from here in the way home from LA when we don’t want to cook.

Mouthful Eatery in Thousand Oaks: super funky Peruvian cafe with fun sandwiches and salads. Food is amazing and different than anything we get in SB.

I love that European market! Next time you go you have to try this really good sausage there, called Cabanossi (dry sausage with smoky flavor) – if you are into that. And their Wiener Wuerstchen are good too :))

Hi,

Between here and LAX – Brent’s Deli and Peddler’s fork are awesome!
I wanted to mention my fave place to stop on the way back from LAX. – Ollo in Malibu – consistently good and a great stopping place. It’s in the Malibu Colony Plaza. https://www.ollomalibu.com/

European Market & Deli is a great resource for authentic Middle Eastern, Slavic & Mediterranean ingredients – produce, fresh breads/sweets, pickles, grains spices. The store is always tidy and clean, the owners & staff are kind and helpful. They were a godsend for running a small Cafe!
