A Top L.A. Pizzeria Is Opening in Santa Barbara

Eater breaks the news that L.A.’s L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele—the Naples original is known by many from its appearance in Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love—is opening “by Memorial Day” in the former Embermill space at 1031 State Street (Figueroa/Carrillo). “As with the Hollywood location that opened in May 2019, expect a large tree-wrapped patio”—what on earth does tree-wrapped mean?—”as well as indoor dining and a bar. In the summer months, there will even be room for a gelato cart, operated by L.A.’s own Gelato Festival crew.”

The L.A. outpost opened to a dismal review in the L.A. Times, but it subsequently made it to Eater’s list of the city’s best pizzerias. We’ll be able to form our own opinions soon enough….

In the meantime, my fave pizza is Marty’s on De La Vina. Really love their pizza made from scratch to order. Whole wheat or white crust. Super fresh toppings. Totally local family.

I’ve loved Marty’s for decades. In the ’90’s I lived with roomates and we had a wall phone with presets. We re-programed 911 to Marty’s phone number.

It sucks that Marty’s Pizza will be closing, at least at its present location. The bridge replacement project requires demo of the Marty’s building, which sits right on top of the creek.

That’s awful news! A pizza with artichoke, tomato, basil, and olives from Marty’s is one of my faves. And the building and date palms are so charming (though seriously in need of some roof repair). Feels like every day a piece of old school SB is slipping away. I hope Marty’s will reopen elsewhere.

Cool. Just what we need. More outposts of LA chains so the interlopers can feel at home in their newly adopted (invaded) town.

We’ve been to L’Antica in Hollywood several times. Not only great pizza but world class pasta! Can’t wait for it to open!
