Rincon Brewery’s Funk Zone Outpost Is Closing

••• Rincon Brewery‘s Funk Zone outpost is closing after tonight. The rumor is that South Coast Deli will take over the space.

••• Nearby, Validation Ale intends to replace its parking spaces with “new outdoor dining, recreational area, and delivery/loading area pursuant to AB-2097,” as per the Architectural Board of Review’s March 2 agenda. The state law in question is the one that prohibits minimum parking requirements on residential or commercial or developments within a half mile of a transit stop, which obviously makes far more sense in a bigger city where people use mass transit.

••• Restaurant Guy posted that Bluewater Grill closed earlier than expected, quoting a reader who said “all the furniture was gone.” The restaurant’s website says “temporarily closed,” so I went to take a look, and as you can see below, the furniture has returned. I got in touch with co-owner Jim Ulcickas, who said, “It’s closed as a Bluewater Grill but will reopen as something else if a sale is not successful.”

••• A profile of non-alcoholic beverage maker “Glasrose, a Santa Ynez Valley–grown brand of verjus launched by American opera singer Sara  Hershkowitz and German writer-musician-winemaker Max Hoetzel. Verjus is made from wine grapes that are picked at lower sugars with high acidities, and then Glasrose enhances that base with herbal, flower, spice, tea, and fruit elements.” —Independent

••• I don’t order in, so I had no idea Jamaican food was an option around here until I saw the advertising for Kool Runninz outside 409 State Street (where it also appears to be serving food with something called Sniki Tiki on the back patio).

••• “The Buellton City Council on Thursday cleared the way for a new weekly farmers market along the Avenue of Flags” on Mondays. “The first market is planned for March 16. The market is expected to run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. weekly from March through October, with an option to extend to 7 p.m. during the summer.” —Noozhawk

••• Word on the street in Los Alamos is that the Montesano Group (Lucky’s, Tre Lune, et al) is opening an all-day restaurant—perhaps akin to D’Angelo’s Bakery—at 645 Bell Street, the new building on the right as you drive into town.

••• The plan to convert the former Ray’s Liquors building (1422 San Andres Street) on the Westside into a market (that includes prepared foods) is still on, according to the Planning Commission’s March 5 agenda. The proprietors listed on the liquor license application are Cole Cervantes, Ed St. George, and Mikhail Pulle, same as at Isla Vista Market.

••• I finally made it to Tamar to try the chicken schnitzel sandwich. While waiting for my order, I ran into a friend who said, “Yeah, it’s good”—and it was!—”but have you tried the lamb sandwich?” My work is never done. UPDATE: I went back for the lamb kofta sandwich today, and it was amazing—one of the best things I’ve had at Tamar. Eating it is messy business, though.

South Coast Deli going into that space would be awesome since I go to their other locations about three times a week. However, the parking is interesting. I drive a truck so I can “legally” park in the yellow zone, I’m supposed to be loading or unloading and I consider getting a salad or sandwich, . . loading. But so does everybody else! On Carrillo people park in the yellow, in the red zones and even in front of the fire hydrant to run in and pick up their order. These issues being said, I would love it. Tamar might not. . .

I am always surprised when people say parking is an issue in the FZ. I’ve been using the Garden Street lot for years and only on July 4th is it full. There is an path in the back of the lot that goes right past Brass Bear, STUDIO & SB Winery. Even better, a waterfront pass works there so its free if you have the pass (a great value)!

Oh, good. More Santa Barbara County residents can dine at Montesano restaurants like this new one, Lucky’s and Joe’s Cafe unaware that Gene uses his wealth to support MAGA, ICE and fascism.

Welcome Gene and crew- after posting this news on our local Los Alamos page- the response was 100% positive to having a new daily option- most of us don’t go to Bob’s as it is always packed! Plenty is not open daily, Charlie’s is, but limited indoor seating.

Didn’t realize all these (overpriced and mediocre) places were owned by one guy who seems like a dweeb supreme. D’Angelos, Lucky’s, Tre Lune, Joe’s. It’s funny when I found this out I thought, “not surprised.”

Other proprietors running better spots around town who actually need our $ rather than just trying to empire build. Thanks for enlightening me.

Gene Montesano is a very good man and restaurateur.
He has longtime employees that he cares about very much—low turnover is a sign of good management. Also, some of his restaurants have been serving excellent food for over two decades. Therefore…he’s definitely not a “supreme dweeb” serving mediocre food. Dweebery and mediocrity don’t last long in a great community like Santa Barbara. Unkindness has no place here either…

I don’t know anything about the owners politics but we do go to Lucky’s and Tre Lune for special occasions and there are employees that have been there forever. I’m a liberal but inquiring about the politics of of every cafe and restaurant I go to might be an onerous and not always happy task.

Gene has made a portion of his considerable wealth off the backs of immigrant labor — the same people the party he financially contributes to is currently terrorizing. If you can look the other way and still claim he’s a good man, I admire your ignorance and privilege. Money made from the Montesano group businesses has been contributed directly to Trump and MAGA in 2016, 2020 and 2024. It’s on public record and easy to look up. His businesses deserve to be boycotted not celebrated.

That’s quite the claim, any proof he’s using undocumented labor in his restaurants or are you just pulling that out of the air?

Jefferson — There’s no mention of undocumented labor anywhere. It just says immigrants.

Then why did he include “the same people the party he financially contributes to is currently terrorizing.”

By no means am I making any kind of accusation regarding illegal employment of any kind. DHS and ICE have made it clear that they are expanding their operations well beyond the undocumented. 1 in 3 restaurant workers in California are immigrants. To make money off of this workforce then turn around and undercut them is despicable.

Santa Barbara residents have a right to now that money spent at a Montesano business has been contributed to the current authoritarian regime and by extension its out of control secret police. If you like your steaks with a side of fascism, continue to enjoy by all means.

Jack F gaggin…you house was built off the backs of immigrant labor – seriosuly, cope harder. My husband worked at luckys and was treated very well with big xmas bonuses, Stop speaking for others you have nothing to do with!! LOL
Jack is the type of people that drive around Teslas with burbling self hate

AFC – looking to discriminate based on politics. That’s close minded.
Its all good! Just make sure you understand, you are close minded person. 100%.

I was saying just the opposite and defending the many great employees at the restaurants. It’s really tough work and I did it for a few years long ago in my 20’s and was exhausted every night, so I have great admiration for every hardworking restaurant and cafe worker in this town.

IMHO the Lamb Kofta sandwich at Tamar is not only one of the tastiest offerings at Tamar-it’s one of the tastiest offerings in the greater SB area!

Not mentioned in article on Montesano group leasing space at 645 Bell Street in Los Alamos is the first tenant to open their doors, Suite 101 a couple weeks ago. Cotiere Winery, featuring winemaker Kevin Law’s first public wine tasting room. Kevin is well known among Santa Barbara County winemakers for his exceptional Santa Rita Hills AVA Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines.
