Very disappointing to not see any Fish Tacos *(similar to former Beachside's) on the menu. During HH, you would get two very filling ones for $6.95, and Mai Tai's and Margaritas for $5.95. Hopefully, the Ellwood at Goleta Beach will have such deals, and a Happy Hour as well! We miss Sunday's at the Beachside, and are anxious to see what the new place has to offer!
I like in summerkan and I drive by the old Mackenzie market just now. Oh my goodness it’s gone! There is nothing there. I guess they are building high end condominiums there? That is the rummer around here. Is it for sure that a new restaurant is opening or could the rummer about high end condos be true?? T.
Oh, interesting. . . Not helpful for true GF people at all, but good to know. Thank you, Tal.
The California Coastal Commission is TRASH I found the bit on the Rosewood Miramar laughable- just yesterday I read on Noozhawk, a opinion piece by Michael Rattray, “Local Natural Gas seeps Belie Claims of Man-Made Threats to Climate”- and I found this amazing bit of published science ( 3 UCSB professorsJR Boles/Bruce Luyendyk & author emeritus professor Ira Leifer )…. Please read, then RE-READ the last paragraph! “Managed retreat” has been a consistent mantra that says we must begin retreating from Goleta Beach Park immediately because of dire sea-level rise. The county prepared a final environmental impact report (2.0) in 2014, with the premise that sea-level rise would range 8 inches higher than the 2000 levels by 2030, 19 inches by 2050 and close to 5-6 feet by 2100. Millions of taxpayer dollars went into this initiative but it was never truly implemented (over time some of the utilities and infrastructure have been removed or replaced). Those who still use the park know of its neglect, which was more a reflection of the County Parks Division’s low maintenance budgets (which have been restored and major improvements are ongoing). As for sea-level rise, the NOAA tides website has measured the Santa Barbara Bouy (from 1973 to 2023) at 1.15 millimeters a year. That’s 2.3 inches over 50 years!
Well said! So true!
Warner is the gift horse that this area loves to look in right the mouth, and punch... Get out of his way and let him build the new Sandpiper! This project is a dream-come-true for the area. Tens' of thousands of people will come here just to play the new course and hundreds of thousands will go elsewhere if its gone. Yes, many tourist and groups choose their destination based on golf. When we have none, (Sandpiper gone, Glen Annie gone) they will go to places that offer what they want. And that's not $30 burritos and a walk down a urine soaked, homeless ridden, dilapidated street with tee-shirts shops and chain stores and drunk college students.
I think the hygiene without a dentist may be a good option. My husband had his teeth cleaned yesterday and the cost was $253 which is out of reach for many.
Meghan was my dental hygienist for years. She’s the best!
What on God's green acres does that mean- why on EARTH would someone want a partially gluten free product? So you only eat the fully gluten free part? Only partially crapping your pants? Please save the ridiculous replies for the vegan gal.
I was thinking the same thing! Maybe it was said in humor. Brophy's looks like a great place for adults to have fun but I would never take children there!
Megan, sometimes LGF stands for "Low Gluten Friendly", meaning not totally gluten-free.
I agree, not what we would go to the beach to eat.
I can't believe someone suggested Brophy's as a good restaurant for a kids birthday party. The Breakwater was a great breakfast restaurant, went there many times, great chefs, great staff, great location. I always ate outside but i never thought of it as a diner? The new owners will have to put out effort to match how good the restaurant used to be.

Interesting. Thank you!
I agree! I read the new Ellwood menu and thought, "I can't wait to go!" We'll drive 20+ minutes to try something new—and on the beach!! Why all the negativity? It sounds like a bunch of curmudgeons afraid of change. Give it a try—or don't—but skip the negative comments about a new business you haven't experienced.
I went to the breakwater this weekend and I am very disappointed with their prices. Same stale decor and double the prices? They could at least change the cafeteria plates forks and knives. No thank you !! I will take my business elsewhere. New owners also think they are too good for their customers. Good luck, but not for me. Roy
On the new Ellwood menu - what the heck is LGF? I'm guessing it has to do with Gluten-Free, but having been GF for many years, I've never seen that and am very curious at the meaning of this term. Also, it is listed as LGF on the Salt & Vinegar Roastie Potatoes. . . sorry, but malt vinegar powder is NOT Gluten-Free.
Man, this comment page has turned kind of mean.

I am so disappointed to see this meat-centric, far too expensive menu. This is the only decent place close to the UCSB campus, but they clearly do not want to become a place for faculty to go. Why does this feel like an Elks club from the 70s? I wish that this menu showed an awareness of their community, which, in Goleta and next to UCSB, is nothing like this.
Linda- TY for pointing out the obvious. u beat me to it, and did a better job than I wld hav done.
The restaurant prior to The Ellwood was reliable and offered a menu that I consider elevated "beach town seafood" and a bar at prices accessible to the hyperlocal market (UCSB, working Goletans, and even Noletans). This restaurant is adjacent to an airport and, most importantly, it is on public land that taxpayers pay for as a park amenity. Locals need a place to go out to dinner a few times a month. UCSB used the previous space for one-on-one entertaining on quite varied department budgets (hello Eris, goddess of being left out of the gods' party). Locals know about "special occasion" places with better logistics, price points, cuisine, and atmosphere (the grand El Paseo immediately comes to mind, Bouchon, and many others). The implication that Goleta Beach needs a pricey "special occasion" place that competes with the many in SB and is located on public land, leaves a bad taste.
On my last visit to the Breakwater, the prices had almost doubled, and they were frying the English Muffins on the gril, so they tasted of everybody else's order. The waitstaff were excellent, though, and I hope everything works out well for them, That saidd, I used to be a regular for Sunday morning breakfasts, but will not be returning.
