The Revamp of Dwight Murphy Field Is Finally About to Get Underway

••• Press release: “The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department will begin construction on the long-awaited Dwight Murphy Field Renovation Project on June 2. The renovated park [across from the Santa Barbara Zoo] will feature Santa Barbara’s first all-abilities playground, created in partnership with the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation. Gwendolyn’s Playground will include a multi-story treehouse, hill slides, inclusive swings, musical play elements, and a calming pod. A new multi-sport field, sized to accommodate youth and adult soccer, rugby, and lacrosse, will feature defined areas on the sidelines for players and spectators, as well as improved sports lighting. Additional park improvements include an expanded outdoor fitness area, a large grass lawn for drop-in activities and picnics, a shaded group picnic area, updated restrooms, new walking paths with lighting, and increased parking. […] The park is expected to reopen in spring 2027.” The renovation was goosed along by a $5 million donation from Ty Warner.

••• Wyatt Flores plays the Arlington Theatre on September 13.

••• Jon Batiste plays the Santa Barbara Bowl on September 20.

••• Via Real between Greenwell Avenue and Padaro Lane is temporarily one-way, eastbound; L. asked what the point of the construction is. Here’s a description that the county Public Works department posted on Facebook: “Starting Monday, April 7, the westbound lane of Via Real/Lillie Avenue from Padaro Lane to Greenwell Avenue will be closed for the construction of a section of the Summerland Coastal Access Improvements Project. Improvements along Via Real and Lillie Avenue include improved bicycle lanes, continuous sidewalk along the southern side, drainage improvements, reconstruction of the existing bus stops, and improvements to equestrian trails to Loon Point. These improvements were developed in coordination with recent enhancements to Caltrans Highway 101 facilities within Summerland. Construction is expected to conclude in August.”

••• I’m pretty sure the mural at Seven Bar is new…. UPDATE: It is new, and it’s by Chadillac Green.

••• The Historic Landmarks Commission discusses 133-135 E. Ortega on May 21, and there are new images of the plan to convert “the existing commercial buildings [including quonset huts] to a 26-unit apartment complex.” This is another one with no parking, but there will be 26 slots for bikes, a movie screen, freestanding grills, a “hanging pod,” and more.

••• I have a lot of Vitsoe modular shelving that I’m hoping to sell, and it’s a bit niche for Facebook Marketplace. The photo below, from our old New York apartment, is only half-relevant: the posts I have in storage are compressed, meaning they’re meant to go to the ceiling, and they’d likely need to be cut to fit; also, the majority of the shelves are 6.25 inches deep—i.e., fairly shallow. (We used them for CDs.) Email [email protected] for the full list. P.S. I promise not to post whenever I have something I’m looking to get rid of.
