The Breakwater was always our goto before Covid. It was heartbreaking to see it fade away bit by bit. I am glad to see that someone has picked it up and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring it back to the great locals' restaurant that it was. It is a treasure that just needs some love like it had pre-covid. I hope that Krista, Debbie, David and the rest of the old team is doing well ~ they are missed.
I too love Mother Bagels but it's real tough to get them. I logged on right at 12 yesterday and had my cart full and then tried to make a small change and then was told everything was sold out. It's a shame since I really like the bagels, but she should probably consider expanding days available or quantities.
As a former NYer (born & bred), I tried Mother’s Dough bagels a couple of months ago. I was not impressed. The spices for the everything bagel weren’t right and the texture of the dough was dry & airy. I wanted to like Mother’s bc she uses organic flour and the sour dough. And I like sour dough. Yetz is by far, the most authentic NY bagel in the area
The rebrand of the Breakwater will be fun to watch unfold. It is fun to see more dining options bringing new life to the harbor, with Dart leading the charge. But I hope the harbor will always keep its eclectic authenticity.
I don't think Warner has that kind of power. And as I wrote two years ago, that part of McMenemy Trail "has always been problematic because of the dreaded section with all the switchbacks, which hikers, cyclists, and dogs regularly cut, causing erosion; moreover, the trail now runs along a section of unattractive fence and by a (rather grand) house and parking lot, which is not the experience most people crave when they’re hiking. So when the two property owners in question said the trail could be relocated elsewhere on their parcels—i.e., further into nature, rather than along the property line—it was a prime opportunity to solve all of the above issues."
This item was only about the part of Franceschi Park that's below Mission Ridge Road.
I am surprised you didn’t get a photo with the enormous stone head/face on one of the Francheschi trails. It’s the one that overlooks the road below you can see when driving up to the house.
Enjoy the McMenemy Trail while you can, Ty is moving it to a new location so the public can no longer get close to his new garden/wedding space.
Luckily for you, they renamed it to Canola Oil for the sensitive western minds.
YAY! Albertsons in Santa Maria has the rapeseed sauces!
Great that the bandshell has gotten a chance for a second life! I doubt that many know of the late 1890's Fred Forbush bath house with a band shell that was built facing the ocean, and amplifying ocean sounds along with the music! Would be fun if somebody played the music that was typically played at the 1901-1913 bathhouse with orchestra balcony for a special event! I would imagine the programs of the time were in the newspaper. Cheers!
So sad to hear that Enterprise has closed. We ate there a few times over the years. The lobster bisque with puff pastry was amazing!
It was built by my friend and SAE fraternity brother at UCSB, Gary Gallup and his wife, who raised orchids commercially in hothouses at Carpenteria. At one time, his company sold approximately 35 percent of the orchids in the USA.
Relieved and pleasantly surprised that the City came up with a simple, and hopefully inexpensive, solution to the Franchesi Park issue. One that didn't take years, award millions of dollars to consultants, or give in to the vocal minority who feel that everything old is historic. More of that please.
I discovered the Fly by Jing's Chili Crisp a month ago and have been putting it on my fried egg avocado toast. And since I have to eat eggs every day to keep up with the chickens, that means I'm eating a lot of it. Hopefully the rapeseed oil that Todd warns about doesn't accelerate my demise. Thanks for the heads-up that I can stock up at Vons!
I thought you made a typo, twice, using, "Rapeseed oil." I thought you might mean Grapeseed oil.. Had to Google it as I've never heard of Rapeseed oil. . . sounds weird to me.
Place stinks. Needs a full re-do. Excited to not waste great real estate and get something decent there.
he is using as a "topping", not as cerel milk
Live life and savour wine, you don't live forever.....
I think that the Breakwater is one of the most underrated restaurants in SB. Let’s hope the new owners don’t over Gucci it up and raise prices. There is a reason why Breakwater has been in business for years.
Thanks for another fun travel read! I lived in the Outer Sunset neighborhood in SF years back. My wife (then girlfriend) and I would venture up the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps and sit at the top of the hill on summer nights to look at the moon. Brought back fond memories of that beautiful city lookout spot.
We’re so excited for what’s ahead at the Breakwater Restaurant. Welcome to the neighborhood, Dudley & Grace!
Enjoy reading your column. You might rethink the use of oils like vegetable, canola, rapeseed, etc. They are highly processed. Best to use olive, ghee, or coconut oils.
Highly processed. Rapeseed oil is heavily processed. Hexane, a chemical solvent, is added to “clean” the oil. Then, a water filtration process removes gums, free fatty acids, and unappealing colors. Although this is considered a safe process, it leads to lower contents of fatty acids and vitamin E, which may affect the health benefits of rapeseed oil.
I don't think using an oil 'cleaned' with a chemical solvent is healthy....no matter what they do after to make it consumable.
Best to you.
Went to SYR for dinner last night and ambience was a 10 but the food was a 5. Crazy prices for pretty boring food that has definitely slipped in the last few years. I think they get most of their business from hotel guests since you now pay for room and board when you stay there. The Plow and Angel remodel is truly hideous and so dark we could barely find the bar to pick up drinks for a pre dinner stroll. Took away all the charm and looks like a Vegas idea of a speakeasy. Next year we go for a drink (we got married there and always go there for our anniversary) and then splurge at Lucky’s or Tre Lune.
Thanks for pointing that out; the listing can be read either way, and I read it the wrong way. I updated the text accordingly.
The house on Freehaven couldn’t have been a “Warner Group”house because “Warner Group” didn’t exist until after 2000. Prior to that “Warner Group” was Warner and Gray, Inc. for over 30 years. Thiep Cung is now trying to assume ownership for all Warner & Gray designs which is incorrect. Copyright issues aside, please buy a copy of Santa Barbara Architecture to attribute the correct architect to a particular building.
