David Byrne to Play the Santa Barbara Bowl

••• Commercial real estate agent Caitlin Hensel reports that photographer Trevor Blackman is opening Mneian Gallery at 3819 Santa Claus Lane in January. Above: “Paradise,” Carpinteria.

••• I have a policy of not mentioning holiday markets because there are too many, but this one is unlike the others: on December 14 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.), a children’s holiday bazaar, with all items made by children, will be held at Jane restaurant on State Street. Proceeds benefit Explore Ecology and Art From Scrap.

••• David Byrne plays the Santa Barbara Bowl on April 14. The Stop Making Sense film really is amazing; here’s one of my karaoke songs.

••• M. asked about the eucalyptus trees being removed at Lotusland. Below is an excerpt from the explanation that the garden sent to the neighbors. The work is now done; around 30 trees were taken out.

To provide for its long-term water security, Lotusland is embarking on the construction of an underground reservoir—an advanced water catchment and storage system designed to capture rainwater and recycle this water for irrigation use throughout the garden. This will be the first water storage reservoir located on our property and this exciting project has been several years in the making [….] To begin this work, this week we began removing a number of towering Eucalyptus trees located along the southern end of the property (inside the pink wall parallel to Sycamore Canyon Road). […] Once construction of the new water system is completed this spring we will repaint the wall in the original historic pink color. We will replant the perimeter with a native landscape buffer inside the wall along Sycamore Canyon Road to promote a healthy habitat. We will also take advantage of this open space to establish a new conservation Oak collection. Because Oaks take time to mature, we began planting screening trees to grow a green wall and create an overstory several years ago.

••• The offer to buy La Cumbre Country Club was withdrawn. There’s a meeting tomorrow (December 10), so perhaps we’ll learn more then….

••• No one identified last week’s Where in Santa Barbara…?, so I posted the answer. The bird of paradise light fixture is at the US Bank branch at Anacapa and Carrillo.
