The Riviera Ridge School
The Riviera Ridge School is a co-ed, independent school fostering a dynamic learning community for students JK-8th grade
Founded in 1938 and set on an 11.5-acre hillside campus in Santa Barbara, California, The Riviera Ridge School is an independent, co-educational private day school serving students from Junior Kindergarten through 8th Grade. The school provides a student-centered, progressive education that balances academic vigor with social-emotional development, maintaining low student-to-teacher ratios to ensure personalized instruction across all grade levels.
In the Junior Kindergarten and Lower School divisions, the curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based learning to build strong foundational skills in literacy, mathematics, hands-on science, and creative expression. As students transition into the Middle School, the academic program expands to offer advanced humanities, honors initiatives, and specialized success seminars designed to prepare graduates for top secondary schools.
Beyond core academics, Riviera Ridge is defined by its signature programs and holistic approach to learning. Its centerpiece Kaleidoscope Program explores world religions, ethics, service learning, and global perspectives to cultivate empathy and social responsibility. The curriculum is further enhanced by an integrated STEAM² framework—incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Movement, alongside specialist instruction in Spanish, visual and performing arts, competitive interscholastic athletics, and outdoor education.
Character development remains a foundational priority through the school’s ExSEL social-emotional learning program, which teaches self-advocacy, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence. Supported by cross-grade buddy programs and energetic school traditions, Riviera Ridge fosters a tight-knit community that nurtures confident, ethical, and resilient lifelong learners.
Rooted in progressive education and innovative best practices, our approach prioritizes academic excellence alongside joy and creativity. We value diversity in all forms and strive to create a community of belonging where multiple perspectives and every student’s individuality and expression enhance their educational experience. We prepare students through authentic, inquiry-based experiences that spark curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning. By facilitating critical thinking, students explore ideas deeply, creating opportunities to grow into confident and inquisitive solution-makers.

Our clients say...
“We have two children at Riviera Ridge, and we are now in our sixth year at the school. It has been a wonderful experience for our children and our family. Our children have both developed a deep love of learning, and this stems from the incredibly supportive environment at Riviera Ridge. Our children have both been consistently seen as the individuals that they are, and the school has done an amazing job of embracing the 'whole child.' The faculty are terrific throughout the entire school, the school leadership is exceptional, and all the enrichment opportunities are very special. It really is a great school!” — Current parent
“We have been nothing but pleased with every aspect of the school, from educational, recreational, and social development, not to mention the everlasting relationships between the kids and our relationships with other parents. Family activities, including trips, school benefit parties, the back-to-school barbecue, and other traditions, will always be part of our memories. Riviera Ridge is more than a school; it’s a community full of amazing educators and great friends. We feel lucky to be part of this community and have found some amazing friendships along the way.” — Current parent
“Our son was very well prepared for high school (high school was a breeze) and is doing great in college. Beyond the academics, he learned to organize himself, prioritize his work, and how to study. The school's sense of community and support of the teachers was wonderful. The cherry on top is that our son and we made lifelong friends.” — Alumni parent
