A Bunch of New Shows at the Santa Barbara Bowl

••• This is turning into the year of the bird for my husband and me: we resuscitated our birdbath and bird feeder, and a neighbor inspired us to start feeding peanuts to the scrub jays that live around our house; my husband is locked in battle with crows (a story for another day); we recently visited the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary; my favorite book in a long time is about the Blakiston’s fish owl; and last weekend we took some animal-loving friends for our inaugural trip to OstrichLand USA in Buellton. If you’ve never been, I recommend it. A few things to bear in mind: you really don’t need more than 15 minutes, you should absolutely pay $1 extra to feed the ostriches and emus, and you’d be wise to go in the morning, because there is little relief from the sun.

••• You should probably download a digital copy of your official vaccination record.

••• Here’s a date for your calendar: Santa Barbara County Farm Day is September 18. It’s “a day full of free agricultural tours and activities hosted at over ten different farms, ranches and agricultural organizations across the Santa Maria Valley.”

••• F. sent over photos of the botanical garden under construction at the San Ysidro Ranch.

••• Sweet new T-shirt design for the Boom Boom Bike Room. The front is nice, too.

••• A slew of shows were announced for the Santa Barbara Bowl, with tickets for all of them going on sale this Friday, June 25. (Would it kill the venue to give folks more notice?) The new additions to the lineup: Jackson Browne (September 5), Gary Clark Jr. (September 19), Wilco (October 20), and Lorde (May 7).

••• Meanwhile, at the Lobero Theatre: Pat Metheny Side-Eye with James Francies and Joe Dyson (September 29), and Charles Lloyd Quartet (October 16).

••• Opening June 25 at Sullivan Goss: Organic, “an expansive and enveloping exhibition of Modern and contemporary art made from clay, wood, fiber (textile), paper, and metal. While these media are typically associated with craft, the artists in this exhibition are more interested in abstract imagery and/or conceptual practice.” Below: two beauties by Nathan Hayden, “Drink My Dream” (pigment emulsion on industrial wool felt) and “Shape Shifter (Dancing Lady)” (ceramic).

That article is bizarre. The ostriches are not even remotely scary.

I think the writer was expecting “big chickens” akin to Big Bird instead of a dinosaur holdover. I have to say, though, when they get into a feeding frenzy…they do give one pause.

Christine!

Hope you followed up your Ostrichland visit up with lunch at Hitching Post- excellent steak sandwiches, beef and chicken salad options, tacos & burgers, wine and afternoon appetizers between lunch and dinner service

We went to Peasants Feast in Solvang for the first time. The mushroom tacos were a hit.

Thanks for the link to get a digital version and QR code of my vaccine record. Very helpful.

Chris Sneddon reported that work to establish the Dorinda Triangle Park will begin in November (presumably 2021). No report on the leaning tower of porta potty.
